How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I feel much more prepared to teach to the AHC, to help the tamariki learn more about the histroy of our country, because this kit has made that learning more accessible for them and for myself.

“The kit itself has some great resources, however I did find it not as user friendly as in you cant just pick it up and run with it. A simple plan to support would be good. However the students are enjoying it with some provocative new knowledge on our history.”

“An excellent resource. The histories were rich and varied in focus. We explored Perserverance as a class to gain confidence in how the Kit worked. Students were grouped and chose a topic to research and report back to the class. Files needed to be downlaoded for students as the files were too awkward and large for students using Chromebooks. I used a Hapara Worspace for students to access their resources. Using Papers Past was not easy for students to navigate and took a lot of time for them to search for the content even when they were using relevant keywords to search with. Overall, it was challenging for the class but as they got into the topics, they were having deeep discussions on what they were finding out. The work needed to be highly teacher facilitated to keep momentum, and support students to make links and ask questions of what they were finding to lead to understanding. Using the kit for the first time to discover its strengths and challenges has given me insight as to how we can use more effectively next year. I have placed neutral for effectiveness of website for students as the students found aspects difficult and did not independently feel confident to move through it.”

“Such amazing attention to detail. The research behind the tasks is astonishing. The vibrant photos, clues and resources made this resource exciting and motivating. The activities were challenging for my Year 5 and 6 children and the tasks I wanted to cover for our topic at school were not available.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The idea of a pepeha, alongside photos and perhaps newspaper articles, are great ideas for adding value and authenticity to our local reasearch.

I did feel more comfortable, reading ahead of the students before we studied different topics. Because we are still moving through this kit, I feel that my confidence is growing as I learn how to get the most out of the kit.

“What a treasure of information! It took me a while to decide how I would best use it in the classroom, and I have ended up journeying with the students. “This is an increadible and well thought out kit. However, it is unfortuanetly far beyond the reading comphrension and technology abilities of my Year 4 classroom. It wuld be interested to provide the ability to teach about the photos/ objects wothout the use of the puzzle-like website.”
