How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? The kit is an anchor and support. NZ history is an enormous overwhelming topic, so having the kit allowed me to chip away confidently without fearing"getting it wrong". It's great that teachers and students explore alongside each other. I'm a New Zea

The kit is great. I'll have a better ability to meet my learners needs the more I use it. I have a year 4 class, and as with most classes of this covid era, they are at an increasing large range of abilities. Some need a lot of scaffolding while others could use the kit as intended.

What an amazing resource! I went into NZ Histories feeling deficient in my knowledge with many gaps. I knew I wanted to focus locally and Ahi Ka made sense. The resource went back in history sufficiently enough to give the necessary information needed to go forward. Physical and digital resources were easily accessible with clear instructions supporting each step. Information was multi faceted and came from many different views. I traversed between the different levels and cherry picked as I went. We focussed for a few weeks on the factual side of history and then moved into the fictional side. At this same time we were doing MITEY and this linked in perfectly with the building of the fictional aspect. Questions were posed about how different participants would have felt during different stages with process drama added in to help with expression and diary writing allowing students to articulate views from multiple perspectives. A culmination was the research and design of a new community being built on the Orakei Reserve to counter the Crowns claims of it being a slum. Would this stop the torching of homes? Students designed a community which included a marae, community gardens, orchards, a kura, a medical centre (following research into health issues), parks, playgrounds, walking tracks and healthy homes (Drawn to scale) which were presented and debated with to the (imaginary) Crown. Overall the experience for both teacher and students was positive and covered many curriculum areas. (Photo attached shows the development designed by the students).

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Our area of Belmont, near Devonport is perfect for this kit. As we struggled with this kit, I don't think we will use the model again.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I think it really helped with my understanding of the curriculum, however, the kit itself was very overwhelming and hard to teach with 30 kids. I do think it's given me a better perspective on the new curriculum though.

A tough one to teach with an overwhelming amount of information and resources. Great stories, and I love the connection with local iwi. I probably wouldn't teach this again.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? The students had lots of different connections to the stories both locally in our area but also the stories of NZ. We still have further digging to do, we’ve only just scraped the surface.

We have loved getting started on this kit. We are a group of 62 kids and we started with the Solidarity pepeha as a model. We worked as a group through this journey. We then split the group across 5 journeys and split the kids inside each group to work on the different levelled tasks. The kids are having an absolute blast and there is so much rich learning going on along with the development of all key competencies.

Alot of the kit was great just some parts were not complete or were not able to be accessed due to iwi not being ready to share. But this was very minimal. A great starting place for any school/ teacher starting to build a unit.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We are in the process of planning a school camp that is around our local stories and I think this was in part inspired by this kit. We are inviting local Kaumatua to share stories of the area as well as a visit to our museum for a bit more history which h

This kit was amazing - the artefacts really helped students to see the stories as 'real' not made up stories and one student made his parents stop when driving past one of the locations of a story they had explored in their learning with 'Something Happened Here'. He even had a photo taken at the site!
