“The kit provided some great resources and interesting information but it was really difficult to distribute these without having a significant amount of time to prepare. If I had the kit a term prior to teaching it, I would have felt much more confident in allocating activities and keeping the learning interesting. It was disappointing that there were items and links missing. It was also slightly frustrating that some locations used mostly one type of medium for the students to explore the learning, e.g. videos or newspaper articles. It would have been more engaging if there was a mixture of these.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? With the big shift to teaching and learning more about NZ histories at our school, I feel like this kit complemented our programme. It was engaging and encouraged curiosity which was great!

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? I believe that is so important! As a school we are also looking at strengthening our relationships with our local community/whanau and iwi so I am so glad that this kit was also developed with that in mind.

It has provided genuine and interesting stories related to important ideas and concepts. I feel so much more confident because I have some knowledge and a better idea of how to research a story.

“We have looked exploring this beautiful kit. The resources were fantastic and once we got used to the site it was easy enough to follow. It has definitely encouraged my students to question issues more and they are already making connections with what they learned during this unit and other things they are reading and seeing in the news. I really hope the website stays live so we can use this year after year.”

The NZ Aotearoa History curriculum focus is on Maori history, colonisation, settlement, connections and relationships between our people in Aotearoa. The Kit was a precursor to exploring the diverse histories of the people in ANZ.

“Overall the kit was well resourced and had a great range of activities and things to learn about. I personally enjoyed going through the postcards and reading the stories behind them. As I have been to a number of the places and grew up near some of them, they had a personal connection with me. However, I found this kit very challenging to use with my Year 4 students as it was above their capabilities, especially after two years of very disrupted learning due to Covid. A number of my Year 4 students are working below the expected curriculum level for Year 4 - and in hindsight I think it would have been better to have the Year 1-3 kit to use with them. It would have been helpful to have the postcards numbered and a master resource list that linked the postcards and objects/photos together at a quick glance. I would have liked having a paper copy/booklet of the website to refer to, as our internet at school is not always reliable. The arrival of the kits was delayed, despite filling in the form and asking them to be sent. I had expected it to arrive during the school holidays or the end of term 1 but they arrived around Week 3 - by that stage, we had been teaching NZ histories for a couple of weeks and had done our own planning. While we did use the kit, it was a very surface level and I ended up selecting a few photos/postcards to use from it, using it differently than what was suggested in order to meet my students learning needs.”
