How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Absolutely, students did their own research projects about family members and presented these. We were able to discuss how these people shaped our local history.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? This kit has been great. It has provided a clear and useful framework that will allow me to teach the NZ History curriculum going forward. I am much more confident sharing knowledge me providing students with the tools to investigate history themselves.

“This was an excellent Kit, just a pity we didn't get it during the holidays at the end of Term 1 as we were scrambling to get to grips with it just 1 step ahead of the students. We found the Pahiatua postcard and stories really interesting especially about the polish refugees as we were able to relate that to what was happening in the Ukraine with all the refugees as well. Bringing the past into the current enabled the children to get a real feel for what the refugees may have been feeling. The students also loved seeing all the photo graphs and imagining what things might have been like at the time they were taken.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? There wasn't one for our area so it would be a great next step for the kiddies to create their own for future students!

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Having the content makes all the difference! It's also a very adaptable kit so you can utilise it to suit the needs of your students. It of course also reflects well with the new curriculum so is a great standard to set your future work against.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I typically had the where do I start mentality and the kit made that simple. Once I had taught the process to students they were then able to start unpacking their own stories.

“As stories were unpacked students developed their own questions and it became obvious how little they actually knew about NZ history. Only a few stories were unpacked as it was surprising how deep the stories go and how much unpacking was required. My Year 7/8 could independently complete the Y5/6 stories but the Year 7/8 tasks definitely needed to be unpacked for my class. This is a resource that I will continue to use. It has given me motivation to use this format for our localised curriculum.”

Would love to set up a kit for our local area. Will definitely be putting the kit away (next to my Something Happened Here kit) for future use.

“We loved this kit! I used it with a group of students for our 'Friday Fizz' electives programme. We started with matching all the artifacts with the photos and pepeha. These all went on the wall in a wonderful detective like display. The students then chose one story they wanted to find out more about and researched the significance of their object and photo. For our final session, they read their pepeha, told us where their story was based and spoke about what the photo and object were all about. We learnt so much! Some of the students in my group found the activities quite difficult. The Year 7-8s coped well, but the younger children did not. I had to support them a lot. I only had 12 children in my group, so this was easy. We learnt together.”
