How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Very relevant as the history of my region was intertwined in at least some way with the local history.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I feel far more confident not being a history major. I know the inter-twined nature of our shared history with far more confidence.

“The resources provided were textile allowing students to not only learn about via reading and talking but inclusive of the senses which made it even more real for them. The lessons were well planned and made a lot of sense. The lessons were also well organized and thought out.”

“This is a fantastic resource, and one I would like to use again in the future. I think all teachers would benefit from using this resource as it highlights the new NZ Histories curriculum, showing how the structure of understand, know, do works in practice. It also shows how to effectively teach an inquiry, using a story format and supporting resources to really engage the students. In addition, it highlights some key stories that we need to know as teachers (especially in our local area) so that we can teach with understanding and empathy.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We were also looking into local history ( immagration, iwi, landscape) that term but I am unsure whether most of the children at this level ( yr 5/6) care too much about history.

“We found that most of the sections were set for the higher achievers in the class ( Yr 5/6) so most of the class found the concepts unrelatable and therefore they weren't interested.”

“A brilliant kit with excellent resources such as time specific postcards, badges, products and advertisements relating to important periods of time in NZ's history. It did take me a while to get my head around it and to work out how to pitch this to my Year 6 students as some of the content was quite involved. However, once started, the prompts created a great starting point for some in-depth and thought provoking conversations.”
