How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I have found more about the history of our area in the Taieri. I have been to a symposium run by the local iwi via the Ministry of Education, which talked about the the impact of colonisation in the Taieri area and how it affected the local iwi.

This kit gave me a fantastic starting point to delivering the Aotearoa Histories curriculum, and even better I can now continue using this model in the future. The kit showed a delivery method that is usable, relevant and adaptive to different content. It helped to build my confidence in what my ‘toolkit’ has in it to go forward teaching Aotearoa History.

“A fantastic kit! The resources are beyond incredible. The variety of stories provided exceeded my expectations and really got us thinking. I loved being able to unpack the pepeha on each card alongside the students. In terms of the student facing website, I felt like some students needed quite a bit more scaffolding than others as there is a lot of content presented to them which was overwhelming for some. The confident students just ran with it and got lots out of it which was awesome. Going forwards I may have been a bit more selective as to which stories I would direct the less confident ones towards. Overall, we really enjoyed the learning that went on during the duration of our unit and look forward to more kits like this one in the future!”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? My students have used the pepeha as a starting point to get them interested in their local area and connecting to stories however we didn't have anything particular to our Hakatere region and the akonga now feel inspired to see what they can find out. This kit being made in collaboration with so many tangata meant that it is a much more reliable resource.

“An amazing kit that has been so well thought out and very complex in its variety of content. The children loved learning about our past and exciting to relive and share some of the events with them. Gave me greater confidence to introduce and teach this new curriculum. Exposed me to a wider range of resources. Loved the pepeha approach and the two linked stories leading to the two treasures. A timeless kit that should not be hurried so will continue to use and develop over many terms. My Maori students felt particularly connected to the cards we have done so far.Thank you to the hours of time, research and effort that has gone into this kit. A masterpiece!”
