How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We are looking at creating a local kit with photos, artefacts and stories created with the help of our tangata whenua, local marae.

It was great to know that the stories were created in collaboration with iwi and represent stories that are important to them and places of significance. We will try and source local stories using the same model of integrity and respect towards the story

“We unpacked our kit and used it to explore our new Aotearoa NZ histories curriculum as a staff. Staff selected a postcards and completed the tasks to find the photo and the artefact related to the stories. Kaiako enjoyed seeing the histories taught through the contexts of places and their stories. We shared our new knowledge by using KWL charts and creating a museum of our artefacts and photos with teachers acting as curators sharing the stories.”

“We loved this kit! So well resourced and our students thoroughly enjoyed learning about every historical event. Loved that it was differentiated and this made it accessible to our students who worked in pairs or small teams so that everyone could learn together. We used a Minecraft Collaborative world to share back our learning through the use of NPCs and the groups each chose a structure or symbol that they felt represented their learning about their event. What they created just further reinforced the depth of the learning that they experienced through this kit. Would highly recommend this kit to anyone from Year 5 up. 5 stars seems a small rating for the real quality and learning that resulted while using of this kit.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? greater confidence in teaching Aotearoa Histories. The kit gave me rich material that I can re-use where and when needed. My knowledge grew over time and did my students knowledge.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? When teaching this kit we only delved into the stories that were relevant to our local area. The story about the pipe band that was founded just down the road really interested the students. We started investigating the local street names as a side story.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I shared this kit and our investigations at a staff meeting and we started to do some research into one of the stories. This kit gave me confidence to let the students be the historians and explore our past.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I have always been interested in histories myself, but being able to teach history has been a stumbling block in making it engaging for students. This kit was great to engage these younger students.

“Something Happened Here is the first kit I have used from School Kits, and I am impressed! It was easy to use, both in planning and teaching lessons. It was a great resource to activate an interest in history, making it accessible to teachers, and engaging for students. The Te Ao Māori viewpoint was clear and helped to give a balance perspective on the historical events of our bicultural country. I enjoyed using the"artifacts", as well as teaching the students how to 'read a historical photograph'.”
