To actually look at the planning and incorporate exploration of our loca area and its history into our local curriculum. Using the resources in the kit to go deeper in the understanding of what actual history is out there.

They could ask questions and seek the answers through discussion and collaboration in pairs or individually whilst researching. I felt really positive with working alongside my students. Knowledg

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? Awesome knowing the stories and where they originated from, who was involved and what the landmarks and pepeha meant. Made the taonga more special. The hands of effects and photograps added more depth to the understanding of what truly happened.

“My class absolutely LOVED this mahi. They were able to work independently as well as collaborate and extend their thinking and research skills. Very interesting and stimulating encouraging my students to go deeper in their understanding of what happened before their time. How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It has - our school has switched from a traditional House system to one that our local Iwi had input into, this kit has inspired me to explore the history of our area further both from the Maori perspective and the arrival of the Pakeha.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? My school already dives into our local area. During the first week of the year, our new students go on a bus trip around our locale, visiting the places our school haka talks about, hearing their stories.

“I loved the breadth of this kit and the huge variety of primary and secondary sources students were able to draw on. Having the local voices brought authenticity to the learning. I found that the lessons on the Polynesian Panthers and Gay Rights only scratched the surface for my students, who took their learning far beyond the kit. My students did find the website a little confusing and didn't go into the resources with the depth I wanted. To counter this, I took the resources off the website and reframed them in Schoology (similar to Google Classroom), and my students worked through that. Once I sorted a system that worked for us, I absolutely loved the kit, thank you.”
