“When we worked on some of the things last year, some of the links were not ready and viable so that made for some interesting re-arranging. The students loved going through the artifacts and found the tasks easy to follow once they found the correct links.”

It is definitely important to know that the narratives are endorsed by the iwi/whānau/community. This is crucial for me teacher to ensure the reliability to the sources I am using and to make sure that we are sharing the stories as intended and correctly

“We had high level of engagement with the resource kit particularly with our Year 9 and 10 learners. The wide range of primary evidence sparked their curiosity and was a starting point for inquiries. The primary sources are also useful for resource interpretation skills practice for Senior History students. With regard to teaching local Aotearoa NZ Histories, the kit has its limitations as it is impossible to cover each area of Aotearoa.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? With these resources and the way that you provided so much support for teachers, I feel very informed and better able to understand how to approach the conversation with students. We have talked at our school previously about teaching NZ history and it created a debate as it seemed the resources/materials we were finding elsewhere were very one-sided and didn't reflect the stakeholders or key opinions from multiple perspectives. This kit has helped a lot for me to feel more confident approaching the topic as there are lots of stories which cover multiple viewpoints and perspectives on the events that have happened here.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Our local area is interesting as it was part of the first main railway line. There are lots of key locations which I think we could explore following this model but there is not much written about our local history so it may take time to collate the stories and perspectives from people.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Personally, it confirmed that what I was doing was heading in the right direction and I have been able to dip in and out of the kit / locations as it slots into our new course outline for both Year 9 and 10. For my department, we have multiple staff who have not taught history before nor come from a history background, therefore this is an invaluable resource for them from both a skills and content point of view.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes! The pointers of how to take what happened in one location, and find similar experiences / stories etc for your local area makes this very achievable.

“The Aotearoa Histories Kit is exciting! It is such a simple, engaging way to integrate the new curriculum into our history lessons. The student website is easy to navigate for both teachers and learners, and tasks are appropriately scaffolded. Source interpretation skills are seamless integrated into the tasks, as well as teacher pointers, which is great for our department as we have teachers who do not come from a history / social sciences background. An incredible way for our students to see that history really did happen “here”!!”

“This resource was fantastic as it introduced using historical sources as evidence. As well, the scaffolding activities for each postcard ensured that all students were able to achieve success and knowledge. The physical resources for each postcard also were an added bonus for the students to look at.”
