“This was my first time using a schoolkit and the amount of information was a little overwhelming. Once I had my head around it, I introduced it to the class (yr4-6) and attempted to walk through the kit together to really scaffold this for them to be able to use it. However, the amount the students needed to read through for this age group was vast. I ended up abandoning it but would love to come back to it again sometime. Lots of really great information, but just needed to dedicate a lot more of our learning time to it to get the most out of it.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I'm somewhat confident, I guess at times its calling on my own creativity and know how when we are faced with challenges i.e when the suggested website is no longer up and running.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Its motivated me to want to learn more NZ history and has in fact shown me how much I don't know about my own country. I could mist definitely use this model.

“The resource itself is amazing, and I loved how it links directory to Aotearoa history. The range of cultures that are included in the resource when the students have to use the clues to research what happened is great. Loved the fact that pepeha was used as a main clue. I found myself also learning alongside the students. Talk about walk down memory lane. I unfortunately did not complete the unit due to school wide commitments, however I'd love to teach the unit to my 2023 class, this time from beginning to end.”

“This was an amazing resource! It was full of information and the children were really engaged. It provoked many questions and discussions and the children were driven to learn more independently. We have been doing a lot of work on our local curriculum and this allowed us to link the two together.”

“My students enjoyed the opportunity to work in pairs and follow the Something happened here cards/clues/website etc. to find out information on the topic of the card. It gave great opportunities for them to share their learning with other groups which lead to awesome conversations.”

“This is a thoroughly researched and competently arranged resource. There is so much information in the pack that you could use it for a whole year! We incorporated it into our planning for this year and used it for our Year 5/6 unit which included ANZH, science and digital technology. The topic taught started wide geographically to learn about the history of towns in the South Island, then closing in on Christchurch, then to the Port Hills including the pioneers and the geology of how the hills were formed. We then brought this in closer again to look at our school cultural narrative where the children created an Education Minecraft replica of their kura. Thank you for your work. We certainly appreciated the resource and the discussions it facilitated.”
