How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We have had opportunities to do this (with a school Centenary), the learning is very rich when it connects to your local environment.

“I have not had the opportunity to use the kit to its full capacity, however, what we did use were the photographs and I will again! This is a cool kit. The photographs were used as a thought-provoking discussion, connecting students with what history means and time. When was the photograph taken, are there any clues and what is happening? It tied in beautifully with inferencing. The children also loved the artefacts in the kit as they were tactile. This was coupled with an old suitcase (op shop) - drama. Who left this suitcase, why, how long ago was that? The children loved the drama and were able to get a far greater understanding of time (a tricky concept for an 8-9-year-old) and what history means.”

“Not all my students could access this as there was far too much reading involved. I prefer the ones where the students don't have to rely so much on devices either. The hands-on ones are much better.”

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? The kit was extremely well made it was just hard for me to comprehend. Needed more time getting head around it. My teacher aide would talk to the photos lots (just with me) and was thrilled to see what was included in our pack from our history.

“As the curriculum is fairly new, I needed more guidance on how to use the pack. I personally found it hard and I use these packs all the time. I think my biggest thing was the photos were soo special and that’s what I loved about the pack and how I can use these photos every year now and tell the rich history from Them. Was pitched high but i will use it next year again and scale it back. I am 32 and there was so much valuable learning for me too.”

Though it a beautiful resource we found that it was suited more to the older children in terms of extending. We would have to do more research into one topic focus to really be able to break it down for the year ones (yr 3-4h

“This kit was exceptional. The resources were beautifully put together in such interactive way. The older children in Inquiry break out groups were able to use the this resources most efficiently in our kura. We dipped into our regional information to link to our local stories.”

“The kit that arrived was great and resourceful, however it was not useful as it did not match our inquiry topic for the term. Perhaps you could let teachers know exactly what is in the box before they order it so that it can be used to its full potential.”
