How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I realised that it is not daunting to explore the history of our local area and that it could very effectively be done thought stories.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It made me realise that students should intentionally be made aware of the rich history of our local area to take a deep interest. Yes, this model has worked brilliantly.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? It was very important. As a school we have a close relationship with our local iwi and to know that their input was required made it all the more valuable.

“We explored 2 stories; Chin Ting and the Polish children of Pahiatua. Many of our students live in an around Pahiatua and they thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the history of their town. The students from Palmerston North were equally engaged.”

“School Kit's 'Aotearoa NZ Histories 2023 Something Happened Here' kit inspired my Year 10 classes to dive deep into the history of our local area. A number of my students live in Pahiatua and their families have been living there for generations, yet they have never heard the story of Chin Ting. Many were also unaware of the Polish children who came to our area as refugees. I also have 3 Chinese students in my class, 2 of whom came to New Zealand as young children and the other one was born in New Zealand. They appreciated the hardship that Chinese people in New Zealand experienced in previous generations but sadly also related to the experiences of racism because they still face that in 2023.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? The kit can be a great starting place to discover contexts for teaching or it can enrich the teaching already done in class.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The variety of stories means schools/kura in any context can find a connection. We loved the story of the protest at Rugby Park in Hamilton as it is just down the road from our school.

“The Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Kit has lots of awesome images and artefacts that make students feel like real historians. Unfortunately, we were not able to enjoy the full extent of the kit due to time constraints - however I feel like the kit can be utilised in a huge variety of ways to suit the needs of any classroom and context.”
