What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? I teach in a bilingual space so this is really important to us. The tamariki loved that each story began with a pepeha.

“We have started but not yet completed this unit. Our Year 4/5 found task 1 to be at a suitable level but found tasks 2 and 3 more challenging. We started with pairs working with different cards until we received your emails about modelling the lesson with just one card. Also after receiving your emails we just had the students work on task one only. It would have been helpful to have these emails before we started the lessons. The information in the unit was really interesting and the children have, and are, enjoying the learning. The kits, and websites, are really well resourced.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? By offering a range of different stories i was not yet. familiar with, I as a teacher was able to learn alongside students and uncover lesser known stories from New Zealand's history. This served as a springboard for me to explore more stories to explore with students in the future.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Motivated me to create a unit where students map out their local area using google maps. Students then add pins to mark locations of interest from local area that are important to our local history.

“Overall, this was a great resource. Unfortunately, some of the activities were pitched a little too high for the literacy capabilities of some students therefore it was difficult to deliver teaching around the resource as intended. What our students found particularly valuable was some of the resources on the website, particularly the "How to Read a Photo" guide. We used this tool frequently throughout our Term 3 Aotearoa Histories unit to analyse both photos from the kit, as well as other historical photographs from other sources.”
