“I enjoyed using the Aotearoa NZ Histories Kit! There were many opportunities for each ākonga to discover their path through the resources. Although there were some ways to help the lower learners in my class use the resources, I did find that they were more catered to extension students who have autonomy of their learning. I will most definitely use this next year!”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? After looking through the photos as a mini scavengar hunt we used some photos from our own area to do the same. We also invited in our local Museum Educator to share some stories about our area.

“Amazing kit with lots of great hands on resources. Tamariki loved looking through the photos which sparked lots of questions and further research. We particularly loved the 'Poi e' record and enjoyed looking at how much things like music has changed over time!”

“I really liked this kit. The recreated artefacts were really cool and the instructions for how to read a photo were something new for my Year 7/8 students. Some students found the stories really difficult to engage with, but others got really into it.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? See above - great for my intermediate level kids. Yes could use the model but haven't had time as only teaching 2 days in a multileveled classroom

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? As the kit has made it so easy to deliver the content, and I got to spend this term ironing out some kinks in my delivery as well as trialing various way to deliver it, I'm more confident. However, it still allows us to be on the same learning level as my students, which is often when they learn best too - when they teachers learning along with them!!

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I have recently taken the lead in the local curriculum development for my kura. I've started creating this resource based on a similar model, with a photo and then the local iwi story on the area too. I'm going to work with the iwi to also ensure I have the right pepeha for each area!!

“This resource was beyond words. I used it with a group of Year 8 students and the skills it taught them as well as helped them strengthen were fantastic. It introduced them to events within NZ's history they had no idea about, and gave them the agency to explore what they were curious about, all based on an image. Even I learnt more this term about historical events than what I knew before. I'm so impressed by this kit and have raved about it to anyone who would listen.”
