What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? That's really encouraging, as it is not always easy to know who to approach and how to go about it.

This kit will be amazing for us in the coming years. However, our kids were not quite ready for it yet. For a school that is just learning how to teach NZ history beyond the very surface level, this was too much for us at this stage. For a majority of students who are just learning what Māori and Pakeha actually mean, beginning to have some geographical awareness outside of their own suburbs, and getting a sense of very basic timelines, this was a stretch. The stories were a little out of reach. But as I said, as we build and integrate Aotearoa histories into our curriculum, students will come through more and more ready for these deeper, richer stories.

This kit comes with an amazing amount of information and resources. This is the first time I have recived a kit and I was very empressed. My class is about half way through and are looking forward to contununing out learning into term four. As a first year teacher I found it very easy to use and the students loved the postcards and extra resources that matched up with the cards and clips.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I have gained confidence in delivering history beyond the big topics of Te Tiriti, Parihaka, ANZAC Day etc.
How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It has made me realise that even 'small' places have rich, complex history that we should be exploring.

My class and I really enjoyed using this kit to explore what has happened in Aotearoa's past and how that has shaped the society we are in today. We loved looking at the artefacts and documents and making predictions about what these things were. This really helped to hook my class in to the topic. I loved how the kit helped tell stories of many different groups of people. My kids were so excited to see their culture and languages represented in the kit. They did find the website hard to navigate at times.

This has been an amazing resource that I have just introduced to my class, so there is lots more exploring to be done. One particular aspect of this kit that has been beneficial is how to analyse a historical photo. We have been able to use this in other curriculum areas when looking at photos and the quality of writing has improved based on this tool.

The kit has high-quality resources and interesting stories backing it up. Personally I have found reading the materials to be interesting and thought provoking. I teach a 3/4 class and was warned that this may be a bit high for my age group. In hindsight we should have listened to this advice but I had high hopes that our syndicate/school would get in behind this kit as was originally mooted. The plan was to get together and use the stories to develop a middle/upper school understanding of the kit and scaffold it for our learners. Unfortunately, our kaupapa changed and we were knee-deep in an unexpected professional learning area. This other area of learning took all our energy and time and the collaborative phase did not happen. While I tried to muddle my way through one of the photos I did not have the time or headspace to effectively implement the teaching and we did not achieve the end goal.

We looked at the Autonomy - Victoria Street Whanganui. My students immediately connected to the pepeha as this is our local area. They enjoyed unpacking the physical kit and talking about the objects and it certainly painted a picture of what they didn't know. The students struggled to connect with the other activities - the photographs of women and the information around early Whanganui businesses. As a teacher I felt pressured as we had so many other learning areas to cover in term 3. I abandoned the unit due to this pressure.

The Aotearoa NZ Histories kit was a great resource to involve students in whole class and group discussions. Exploring the photographs, documents and artefacts, that come in this kit, created opportunities for purposeful research and reading. Examining the photographs and finding possible stories behind them was great learning. There was a lot of learning in this kit, not just for the kids, but for me too. Next time I will incorporate a trip to the Auckland Museum as part of our learning.

The photographs and replica artefacts were very useful for our inquiry, but the stories behind them were difficult for our learners to access and comprehend. The teacher website was confusing and difficult to navigate. The student website was even more confusing for our students.
