What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? This was great to know because I am a bilingual class this was exactly the type of resource required for teaching and learning.

“Great resource particularly if you want your student to learn/know about the events, businesses and other kaupapa that shaped New Zealand. I love the fact that Pepeha is a clue used to support students with their research and that there are resources for both students and teachers to use. Unfortunately, I don't think that we did this resource the justice it deserves as I received the resource midway through term 3. Although, I had the students at least use the cards provided to research some of the cards. Even I learn things I never knew happened.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Increased my confidence. Helped me to see how we can use local stories and local ideas, and helped me to see how we can help our children to do this, we don't have to have all the answers ahead of time.
How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Definitely could use this model. I'm thinking of creating some similar stories on a much smaller and simpler scale that we could use with younger learners.

“I used this kit as part of our literacy programme. I went through the postcards before using them with my class and selected stories relating to our inquiry focus for the year - food. Originally I thought I would use 6 postcards, but we only got through three stories in reality. I have Year 4 - 6 learners, working in Level 3 of the curriculum. The children were in mixed ability groups, and chose the postcard that they wanted to work on. From a literacy perspective, the postcards supported multi-modal 'reading' and 'writing'. The children took notes as they worked, and wrote a report about their learning at the end. The postcards also supported our inquiry work, and put a personal story / link to some of the ideas we had already talked about in class. As an example - the Mauka story provided evidence for the idea that different foods came to Aotearoa with immigrant families. The children hadn't really understood this idea until they worked on the Mauka story. Perhaps most importantly - my children LOVED this kit. They asked if they could continue working at break times, or take the work home to complete. They said they felt like 'detectives', and they loved the idea that they were discovering this information for themselves - they felt like they were the first people to find this information out! They're very keen to continue learning in this way. They made links across the different types of information, and made links with what they already knew from previous learning. This kit is BRILLIANT, and everyone should try it!”

“This has been a great resource for my Year 10 students to use. I made slides to go with this based around importance of local histories, our local history and turangawaewae to introduce the unit. I also taught them about usefulness and reliability of sources. It would be useful to include a tab on that for teachers who are not History trained but are using the kit. It has been interesting to see what skills they have and what skills they are learning to develop through the different types of resources. The organisation and use of different digital resources has made these a lot more accessible and this will be of significant benefit for my students who choose to take history in Year 11. The instructions on how to analyse a photo were good but it would be great to see some extra resources on how to actually use Papers Past, Digital NZ and strengths / limitations of different types of resources. I didn’t teach them how to specifically complete all tasks but left it as self guided to see how they unpacked and understood and used the different resources. Some of them struggled but worked their way through challenging questions. The use of photos and artefacts definitely elevated this and made it a lot more interesting - ie not just digital. Some of the questions were a little unclear and missing links but we were able to problem solve around this. Having taught Year 7-13 for 9 years it does seem a little too difficult for students below Year 9 to tackle this independently but for teachers to unpack and build their own units around or focusing on one story it is an excellent resource. Great range of topics and stories throughout as well.”

“This is an incredibly structured resource. It is great to do student led or teacher led depending on where you are at with the inquiry process. Awesome to also do in bite sized chunks or all together. The student facing website is awesome - could potentially be split (rather than 3 columns) for those students where it became cognitive overload and required students to abstract the information only pertaining to them. Could you just have different pages within the same website?”

We have used it as a launch into an in-depth look into the Land March, and also for students to investigate various protest movements using the cards, artefacts and website.
