How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? A lot. Not just motivated me, but the children too. They are really keen to make connections and links to our local area history.

“This program was well documented and was used in a composite class Years 6-8. The engagement, mind you a small class, was well received and participation by tauira was rewarding as questioning techniques using the six thinking hats gave depth to the learning. We have one more set of books to do and this will be completed Term 3. Learning about the trials of our tupuna and the obstacles faced gave credence to a lot of purakau and kaupapa for our tamariki.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes, we actually learnt about the history of our local area in 2021, so it was great to see stories about other areas. Yes, I could use this model and intend to keep using the kit in the future.

“What an amazing kit! My class of year 6 and 7 students really enjoyed the story that we covered - I thought we would do more, but they were really interested and one story took us about 3 weeks! I am looking forward to doing some more next term as part of our independent reading activities - now that we know how to use the website it will be great! It was worth taking the time and really following the instructions for how to use the website, I feel that the students could easily use it without me next time.”

“The kit arrived a bit too late for me to use it the way I had anted and my students were at the part of their quest (inquiry) where they were creating their artifact from their research, however we took time to go back and use a couple of the prompts - one very guided and a couple with more freedom. I also went through and removed some of the items in the kit, then gave them the rest to see if they could find a link to the postcards we'd investigated -or any other parts of NZ history we'd covered. This was such a great resource and I will definitely use it again. Even with only using part of it, it was highly engaging. The stories were deep and the artifacts made it so real for the students. One particularly special time was the writing on the back of the cigarette packet. I have a student who arrived from China earlier this year and who is used to being the slowest to read things. She was reading the packet and told us it was in ancient Chinese but she could make out some words. They sounded like directions. I wondered aloud "Wouldn't it be cool if it was a direction to someone's gold claim or something like that?" So she and a partner immediately set down to trying to decipher the writing and worked out much of the writing. They never managed to do it all, but they decided it was indeed a treasure map! Her enthusiasm became infectious and she became the font of all knowledge for a time. This was priceless. I'm sorry I didn't capture it in a photo for you.”
