I was opretty confident before and had a whole lot of resources already (my class were already half way through the unit when the kit arrived) but still this led to deeper thinking on a different tangent from where we were heading. It has ignited my curio

“The kit arrived a bit too late for me to use it the way I had anted and my students were at the part of their quest (inquiry) where they were creating their artifact from their research, however we took time to go back and use a couple of the prompts - one very guided and a couple with more freedom. I also went through and removed some of the items in the kit, then gave them the rest to see if they could find a link to the postcards we'd investigated -or any other parts of NZ history we'd covered. This was such a great resource and I will definitely use it again. Even with only using part of it, it was highly engaging. The stories were deep and the artifacts made it so real for the students. One particularly special time was the writing on the back of the cigarette packet. I have a student who arrived from China earlier this year and who is used to being the slowest to read things. She was reading the packet and told us it was in ancient Chinese but she could make out some words. They sounded like directions. I wondered aloud "Wouldn't it be cool if it was a direction to someone's gold claim or something like that?" So she and a partner immediately set down to trying to decipher the writing and worked out much of the writing. They never managed to do it all, but they decided it was indeed a treasure map! Her enthusiasm became infectious and she became the font of all knowledge for a time. This was priceless. I'm sorry I didn't capture it in a photo for you.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We have done a few projects looking at how Maaori grew plants and how maramaataka influenced our country and why that is important to our history and now.

“My class loved the pack. They enjoyed looking at the photos and learning about New Zealand history. We made posters with the photos we had and researched about when and where they were taken and what significance they made to who we are today. I am at a school where there isn't much curriculum focus on Aotearoa histories and I have enjoyed showing the resources around and having other classes learn from our posters.”

“Beautiful kit. Easy to navigate for ākonga to learn valuable historic events . We started with a place that I had visited and that my ākonga can visit as I believe they can now view the memorial (Michael Joseph Savage) with a deeper appreciation of all the history behind it.”
