Whilst I fully expected that my students would have experienced uncomfortable moments online, I was surprised at the low number of students who have their digital use actively monitored to ensure their safety. What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Their high level discussion and willingness to challenge each others' statements and debate ideas.

“What a fabulous school kit this is! It took me a little while to get to grips with the materials and how they are intended to be used, but once we started the learning and discussing process, it all became much clearer. The students were extremely engaged in what we were doing and it generated some high level discussion. I found I needed to amend some of the content and order of things to suit my Year 6 class, but overall, this was a excellent kit and I want to reuse the content to use again next year.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Many of the students are very active online, more than I actually thought. This was not limited to common Social Media site such as Facebook, Tik Tok and Instagram. Students were interacting with others through gaming. They had been put in uncomfortable s

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Students were quite comfortable talking about the issues and that for many the topic was relevant to them. Also, at first there was a level of immaturity about i.e. that material on the internet was a bit of a joke rather than a serious issue.

“This Kit allowed the class the opportunity to discuss issues they were facing online. It pathed the way for some open and frank discussions about what they had experienced online. I was amazed at how deep the children had gone interacting with strangers online and felt the knowledge learned, will help to to stay safer. I liked the emphasis on what the children could do, rather than systems and policies that protected them. These systems are only relevant when the children are in controlled situations (e.g. school) but do not offer protection outside of these environments.”

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? We posed a question at one point asking our students if they would still complete their work if they knew it wouldn't be checked by a teacher. I assumed that a few of them would say yes and the rest would not be interested. But instead there was a 50/50 s

“Our students were hesitant at first to engage in conversations about digital behaviours, however as time went on they became increasingly interested in having good discussions and arguing for their points of view. Looking at examples of different philosophers and their arguments, really helped our student frame their thinking. By the end of keep it in line, our students were well versed in thinking from different perspectives and using this to analyse their potential behaviours and impacts on others.”

“Lessons were well structured within the overall programme allowing students to engage with the topic in small manageable bits. They were given appropriate strategies to discern what was in line and what was out of line, and what to do when they found themselves in difficult situations.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Having had a variety of issues online in the past years, this kit gave me the knowledge of how to teach kids about 'keeping inline' better, especially as majority of their online experiences are at home

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I think students are a lot more aware of what is going on around them than what I thought. I was surprised that a lot of students said they wouldn't talk to their parents if they were being bullied. I was also surprised at the apparent lack of self worth

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? I was surprised at the kids openness discussing certain topics. It makes me a little bit sad that so many students are exposed to and aware of things that really belong in an adult world.

“This kit was one of the most interactive kits I have used. The way it was structured gave lots of opportunities for the students to engage as a group. It was all delivered in a non-threatening way and gave me as the teacher a safe way to address some real concerns that our students face. I would love to use this kit again at the start of the year in terms of building relationships between the students using the scenarios relating to being a good friend and how we can deal with certain situations in a positive manner.”

“This was a great kit and very timely as we had had a number of issues with regards to incitement, and online harassment which were impacting on in-class relationships and group dynamics. It generated a lot of dicussion.”
