In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I was able to see and respond to some of the issues that were raised throughout the unit and how the children responded. I wasn't aware that some did not know what to do until the task was presented.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? That many of the children didn't understand what the rating for games, videos and tv shows meant. We had to dicuss this in dpeth.

“I really enjoyed this topic because I think that many children who have access to devices and the internet aren't always aware of how to aapproach difficult situations online. This was very relevant and useful to implement in the classroom. I would like to use this again but earlier in the year.”

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? These resources were so versatile and we used them for other units other than our one on digital citizenship.

“Wonderful kit, the resources were very versatile and we were able to use these for so many other concepts other than just those covered within our digital citizenship unit. Students enjoyed the activities especially because the resources were so up to date and relevant to students. Thank you.”

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? They absolutety loved using philosophy in order to discusss big ideas. They were totally honest in their choices- they could back up their thinking with good reasons.

“I really struggled to get my head around this unit of work as it was very different from anything I have taught before. I spent a lot of time trying to unpack the many different sessions and the new ideas myself. We spent weeks on this and I ended up teaching it first thing as they needed to be 'fresh'. It challenged my way of teaching and the students loved the discussions. Most importanly I learnt not to pass judgement on a student's decision but rather let them decide for themselves in their own way and time. Rethinking thinking was very powerful in my class- we linked this to our prior knowledge on react vs respond. I have some very good photos from our sessions- students responses and ideas.”

“I found the plan quite hard to follow - not clear what resources were what and it was quite vague. It didn't really motivate me to teach it to be honest despite looking really exciting.”

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? I was surprised at how honest they were and also how articulate their discussions were.

“A great kit which really got my students engaged. There were lots of conversations and some really interesting viewpoints and discussions. I did feel that some of the material was a little sophisticated for my year 5 &; 6s but the kit addressed issues that were very relevant and confronting.”

“This was an amazing unit! it was by far the best schoolkit I have taught from. It was informative and engaging for all the students. They benefited so much from the safety around online and offline was the perfect time for many of our learners. They are very involved online and did not see the relationship between online and offline, until this unit of work.”

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? We are also doing KiVa and I was surprised that the kids didn’t always make the connections.

“The concept for this kit is excellent. We supplemented it with some resources from Common Sense media. The videos for this kit showed very young kids and our Y7&;8 kids related better to videos with older kids. The game wasn’t intuitive and we needed to work through the guidelines a couple of times.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I actually assumed the worst but no one appeared to have gotten into too many dangerous situations. The main issue was online fights between friends or other school members.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? How quiet they were! The sharing was harder than I thought to begin with. Using the cards allowed them to discuss without implicating themselves in anything.

“This was a challenging but brilliant kit. My class were very quiet (yr7-9) when it came to discussing their online behaviours. I think they were concerned they might be judged. No one admitted to getting into difficult sites or situations. However, the situation cards did bring on some good discussions regarding online and offline behaviour. Making the distinction between the two was a good conversation enjoyed by all. The game with the emotions was enjoyed by all and resulted in some heated debates.”
