In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? It didn't really because as a mum of a child the same age as the children I teach - I'm very aware of the realities of what our kids are exposed to online and is one of the many reasons I felt so strongly about teaching the unit.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I had a situation with one of the scenario cards which talked about a girl getting her period - this was an awkward moment as one of my 9 year old girls had no idea what a period was and openly asked - so I had to talk to the class about this on the fly -

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? There were quite vast differences in the kinds of boundaries different students had at their homes, this seemed to link in with how informed their parents were.

“This was a great kit and very much what our students needed - we are finding that less and less our parents are informed and many of our children have quite loose boundaries at home due to lack of parent information about the types of activity that so-called child friendly sites have enabled. We had lots of great conversations as a class as a result of the acitvities and I was glad that we made this the focus unit of term 4 so we could really give the lessons the time they deserve to go into depth and really get the kids engaged. Highly recommend and am looking forward to using this resource again. Such important learning for our tamariki.”

I hadn't realised that a small number of children were approaching conflicts and online issues without having any real understanding of others feelings. Although this was a very small minority they consistently expressed the opposite emotion to a situatio

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? My class are on far more social media and games that interact with strangers than I realised. They are connected to each other but don't see the implications of their behaviour online in the same way as offline. We have had several parents in to see us af

“I was really impressed with the kit. I am one of the school elearning leaders and I would love for more of our classes to tackle these discussions. I was surprised by the depth of discussion around the situation cards and feelings and it gave me valuable insights into the background beliefs that some of my students bring to the classroom. A fabulous kit - highly recommend to all Year 5-8 teachers!”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Marble activity was really interesting it showed many children’s insights and views/worries into the online world which then gave some great direction for teaching

“Excellent kit. Well worth every buy if time as I feel what information is included in this kit is so extremely important to be teaching with our Year 7/8 students.”

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit Because we teach Keeping ourselves safe, every other year it was easier to touch pretty delicate subjects. We carefully chose cards based on the children's needs and level of comfort too.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Several students are accessing material that is not age appropriate - with their parent consent (apparently). May are spending too much time on social media/ devices. It is a very relevant topic to discuss.

“The Safer Digital behaviours kit was really helpful as a method to raise issues around boundaries both online and offline. The students could relate to the scenarios and were encouraged to come up with reasonable responses to these. It was taught in conjunction with a Life Education unit around responding v reacting. The messages in both sessions were very complimentary. The children makde lots of connections.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Interesting how they think online is safe than in person and that all they could think about is that in the real world they could get kidnapped by strangers

“Thank you for putting this kit together. The resources were relevant to the students lives and they were able to relate to all of it, as well as learn from it.”

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? I was surprised at the 'innocence' of some students, but pleased as well

“The children really enjoyed talking about this topic and the activities to go with it. There were some challenges for all who participated, especially in their critical thinking about their own lives! Children loved the scenarios - the yellow cards, had robust discussions and enjoyed feeding back and voting on the best decisions. Personally I enjoyed discussing bigger picture and keeping calm when we considered our options for solving problems. I think this is a vital topic and should be taught every year to our tamariki. I taught it after doing pubertal change so it was perfect!”
