What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The things that they were seeing online and how they acted when faced with those situations were shocking to me.

“The kit was a great tool for some in depth discussions around digital safety and encouraged the students to speak out about situations they experience online. It also helped them to have a safe person who they could talk to about things they experience online that they are unsure about. They really enjoyed the scenario cards and choosing the feeling and actions that they should do if they were in that situation. Students are starting to be online more and more so the invisible ring activity was also a really good discussion that they identified well with.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Students were open to discussing the issues that they face, and it was interesting that so many of them face similar issues.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit Fine. I teach Sexuality Road and you have to be comfortable with dealing with all of the topics within that unit!

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The analogy of getting 'lost' offline and online surprised a few of my students - that they wouldn't like getting lost in real life, yet they easily do it online.

“A school kit that was appropriate and relatable for my Year 8 class. Lots of healthy discussion came out of the varied activities, and got the students really thinking hard.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? They didn't change drastically as we had already had a lot of robust conversations around safety from our 'Keeping Ourselves Safe' unit.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit As above, after our Keeping Ourselves Safe unit, it was a nice transition. Students maturity was really shown and this continued with some of the more difficult topics to address.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Some on their online boundaries at home were surprising. Some have no restrictions or privacy settings and we discussed this a lot.

“We used this resource after we finished our Keeping Ourselves Safe unit from the NZ police. It was a perfect transition unit and provided great discussion depth.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I was a bit ignorant to the fact that inappropriate stuff on line is just accepted as the norm to some students. Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I think it would've been beneficial to split my multi-levelled class into groups and then addressed different content. Some of my younger students were still very innocent in an online sense. Because of this I removed some of the ";that's out of line card

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? I was surprised how normal it was for my students to talk to strangers/pretend to be someone else in an online sense and yet horrified at the offline suggestion of meeting up with someone they didn't know.

“The timing of this kit couldn't have been better. My students are beginning to make chat groups with others in their class and some of the ";that's out of line"; cards addressed topical situations and made students think about how they might feel in those situations. It was really important that the ";that's out of line"; cards were sorted through first to remove any that might be inappropriate for some students to hear. This is a resource that I will be able to refer back to regularly next year. The decision maker sheet instigated some really insightful korero amongst students.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? The marble activity gave us less insights than the decisions chart - that one sparked a lot of great conversations about what is appropriate in different situations and how that can be different for each person.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Many of my students have been exposed to inappropriate material or conversations online. They do not associate that as being a problem with the app/programme they are using, but just a part of life. This worried us as we realised that they were not making

“This was a really well thought out kit and my students loved the different activities in it. It sparked a lot of conversations amongst the students about appropriate behaviours and really grew their awareness of the similarities and differences between online/offline.”

“Great kit - but hard to start (as in the beginning activities weren't captivating for the students) we had done the keeping ourselves safe unit the term before.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? They had more knowledge than i was expecting and also I was shocked at what they had been exposed to online as 9, 10 and 11 year olds. We had some in depth discussions.

“Having younger students year 4-6, i made slight alterations to the kit and we discussed areas that i felt were relevant to them at the time. Good discussions re online bullying and what happens when ads pop up that are inappropriate and what we can do about it.”

However, as we went on it became very clear that it needed to be talked about. These kids need to know what to do when these situations happen and that it's not okay

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The amount of socialising the kids in my class do with people they don't even know. I was surprised how okay they were with not knowing the people they talked with. It was interesting to see how openly most of them talked about their experiences of nasty

“This teaching resource was absolutely fantastic. It followed on perfectly from our Life Ed visit that looked at online and offline reputations. It was easy to follow and the resources were well developed to go over some of those big and uncomfortable issues that we face in the online world. The other teachers in my team saw what we were doing in class and have downloaded the online kit so they can work on it too.”
