“Loved this kit. This term our school was learning about Tangarua and how to look after him. Plus eariler in the year we'd looked at plastic and how we could reduce our usage.
Today we went to Pourerere beach and did a clean up.
Tamariki were surprised with what rubbish they found (jandals and cigarette butts).”
“This was such an awesome kit! Our topic focus for the term was 'our community'. This kit tied in beautifully where we got into deep discussion about why we need to keep our community clean. Thank you”
“We visited three areas in our local area: two different parks and an estuary. All within walking distance. Each trip we focused on how to care for this special place, talked about how we are the guardians and the importance of protecting them for people to use.
At the estuary we focused on our'clean up'. When I went for recce beforehand I was concerned we wouldn't find any rubbish as the place looked really well cared for. However on the day I had some real champions who found heaps of rubbish, especially the tiny bits that would have blown into the sea. When we analysed the rubbish back at school we were surprised at how many food wrappers we had picked up.
This kit was a great initiative and we will used the ideas again next year, maybe in another area. The analysis activity was very interesting. We wondered what type of rubbish would be the most common in other areas, like the park or the bush. Something to think about on our next trip.
This was our first school kit, and I enjoyed using it so much I am looking forward to using another! Thanks School Kit!!”
“This kit was well resourced and engaging for the students. The children were surprised by the small amount of rubbish in the domain and this generated good discussion. Due to the delay in receiving the kit we felt a bit rushed.”
“It was great for the children to be out in the community doing a service. They were very keen to tell there whānau all about the rubbish we collected and how to reduce and recycle. The resources in the kit were great and we discussed the use of paper bags and material gloves. Thanks so much.”
“Another amazing resource! Thanks so much for all the fantastic work you do School Kit. The Sea Cleaners kit was a huge success with the children in the class being really interested in how rubbish that is dropped so far from our waterways can still end up there. All are now keen to get their families involved and pick up rubbish the next time they are at the river or beach.”
“The children were excited to get out into our community and find rubbish. It was great to get parents and even grandparents along to support us with this. They loved getting their own gloves to wear. We were pleasantly surprised at how little rubbish we did find and it made us wonder what other parts of NZ are like. We did find it a little more challenging to sort and analyse the rubbish in the wind and even find any kind of recycling information on it. Even though we are onyl 5 &; 6 years old, we still felt we played an important part in ";saving our planet"; and how to educate our parents. Thanks heaps School kit!!”
“All the Year 8 classes went down to the local lake front and cleaned up for the morning. I was really interesting how much rubbish they collected. As we initially walked through there did not seem to be much to pick up, however as we started hunting for rubbish we picked up quite a lot. It was difficult to judge the kind of plastics and their recycling numbers, because not all seemed to stamped with it, or pieces were to small.
Thanks for the oppertunity to participate and providing us with the gloves and resources.”
