What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We learned more about sea creatures including how to draw them. There was lots of maths involved in the rubbish statistics and language skills were developed through conversation and new vocabulary.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Sustainability, climate change, how to reduce our impact on the environment.

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? They were shocked by the amount of rubbish we picked up on our hikoi and have been making more effort to pick up rubbish around the school grounds.

My class really enjoyed this kit. They were shocked at the amount of rubbish we collected on our hikoi around the school block. This kit tied in very well with our healthy waterways kaupapa and our snorkeling trip to Maitai Bay as part of the Drains to Harbour Programme. All of the resources were high quality and the children loved having their own gloves to keep.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Science learning about ocean animals (river to the sea connections)
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We are going on a camp to Napier to learn more about the marine environment and the animals within, we will clean up at a beach while we are there.

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? The kids were astounded how much waste was in or near our local waterways. It has really helped them think about where they put their rubbish and how they can reduce the waste they create.

We really got a lot out of going out and cleaning the waterways in our area, the kids couldn't believe the amount of waste going into the rivers! We are going to take the gloves with us to our camp near Napier in Term Four so that we can continue our cleaning and learning at a beach.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Science - Waterway/pollution of water/fish life etc Technology - Building products that support cleaning of waterways/stop pollution at source e.g. plastic bottles etc

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? It highlighted the amount of rubbish in Nelson City. Amount of rubbish in waterways was also a major learning factor for the students Also the range of rubbish that was found and in some interesting locations

This was a great opportunity for students to see the current situation of waterways in Nelson City. Furthermore, it highlighted/make the learning real via a true context of collecting rubbish. The topic aligned with our literacy theme and allowed us to study a range of sea creatures and produce reports etc. Overall the children and class enjoyed that gained a lot from this unit.

The sea cleaners kit. This was an awesome kit. The students really enjoyed the clean up as well as the follow up activities. They were both shocked and amazed with what we cleaned up. Over 800 pieces of rubbish!

We were not by the ocean, so worked on a local stream that feeds into waterways that lead to the ocean. Gloves were fantastic as we used them for planting alongside the stream also. Tauranga Reserve, Havelock North.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We looked at our Earth and how we need to look after it in our Religious Education (we are a Catholic School). Our Earth is a gift and we need to look after it and all that is on this earth.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? More mathematical investigations and also inquiry into ways to change what we do with regards to the environment.

Hi there. My class really enjoyed this and were focussed about wrappers in lunchboxes and how we could reduce this so we made some beeswax fabric sandwich wrappers. We just kept our investigation local around our school but talked in depth about waterways and rubbish being swept away and down these.
