We thought the Beach Clean up Schoolkit was amazing. We were impressed with the quality of the gloves and rubbish bags. The children were very excited for the gloves. We even used left over rubbish bags and gloves for our final assembly sharing when we sung a song 'Save the Planet' and used these as costumes.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? It tied in well with our topic which was Oceans. We were also able to categorise and count up the rubbish which tied in nicely with maths.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We looked a little further by analysing the rubbish and grouping into recyclables and non recyclables. Discussion continued around having more opportunities for learning of the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle.

A fantastic kit that tied in with our Ocean unit. As well as learning about ocean creatures, our class also explored marine environment and the impact of rubbish on the oceans. Sea Cleaners allowed the students to be environmental advocates for their local area.

What a great idea the kit was! As a syndicate we cleaned up the streets around our homes school, as we thought this was a relevant area for them to see how the local rubbish could have a negative impact on our waterways.

This was a thoroughly enjoyed learning kit. The children were so motivated and enthusiastic. We received some positive comments from community members while doing our beach clean up. We connected our learning to our school pepeha and how our Moana is important to us and our ancestors. We did our clean up at our Moana. It was really exciting to hear them talking to others about what we were learning and doing. They were able to give many explanations as to why and the importance of our part.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? This was our inquiry so it linked to maths (statistics and measurement), writing (arguments and recounts) and we read about recycling.

We took it further and looked at our recycling centre (visited it) and had Zero Waste come in and they learnt about the lifecycle of products and how they can have a positive impact on the sustainable use of natural resources by recycling. We loved using this kit alongside our Waste Warriors Inquiry. Learning about the catchment was a great link from our previous inquiry about Our Story (big focus on the Whanganui River). Our kit was dragged out a lot and now even further with Covid, but we are determined to finish it. Students loved learning about the lifecycle of a plastic bottle and we were able to use this knowledge when Zero Waste (a company who came into school) came to do a few days on recycling. As a follow up we used recyclable plastics to create sea creatures from. Looking forward to finishing off our clean up around our school and filling in our poster when we return to school.

It was a great kit that allowed students to really understand that they need to pick up rubbish. It was able to give them a simple connection of how this rubbish gets to places that we don’t want. They connected with photos of seeing animals Witt rubbish attached to them. The gloves were a great touch and the kids loved using them.
