Room 8 really enjoyed receiving our sea cleaners kits. It was very exciting trying to guess what was in our special delivery and then working out what the gloves and rubbish bags might mean. We had some awesome rich discussions. We had been learning about being Kaitiakitanga of our school and our community so the sea cleaners kits was an awesome addition. The children were so excited and proud to go out every afternoon and collect rubbish found in our school grounds. We had some great discussions about how rubbish gets into our school grounds and what we could do to help make our school cleaner. We examined the rubbish we collected and saw that plastic made up a lot. Our sea cleaners kit lead us to learning about the Great Pacific garbage patch, gyres, and protecting our sea life from rubbish. The children made great posters that they displayed around the school about keeping the sea rubbish free for our sea animals. It is wonderful that my class of 6 years olds are passionate about protecting their world. Thanks so much for the kit. We loved it. I will try and attach some photos Trudi Storm Room 8 Beach Haven Primary

Really great resources - loved how many pairs of gloves there were. The posters were great and such good quality. We used everything in the kit and it was perfect for our term's topic.

The sea cleaners kit was a hit with my year 3/4 students. They loved exploring all aspects of the waste cycle and where our rubbish ends up. As well as the clean up of our local stream we participated in a reusable day to understand what else we could do with our rubbish instead. The gloves were a hit with the children and they posters where we glued the rubbish on helped them understand more clearly how rubbish effects the sea animals.

The children learnt a lot and had fun with this kit. To begin with we explored water ways and looked at the water cycle. We then looked at the effect of plastic in our oceans. We happened to have our schools persuasive speech competition so some of the children used this learning in their speeches. At the end of the unit we created the posters and presented them in assembly to the rest of the school. Those posters have also been distributed around the school to help educate others. It was a great topic and a great kit. The children were most enthusiastic about picking up rubbish and really enjoyed picking through what we found to classify and count. It has inspired inquiry in one of the other classes as they had questions about how our rubbish gets into the water ways.

This kit was an awesome way to encourage our tamariki to become kaitiaki of the ocean. We took the clean up bags away with us to camp, and used them to clean the beaches around Kawau Island. The kids noticed that there was alot less litter around there than their was in our direct community. This stemmed alot of good conversations on why, and how the population density relates to the amount of pollution. The posters were also really helpful as a starting point for critical thinking.
