This kit fitted in very well with our unit on being Waste Aware and thinking about our part in the plastic problem. We went on a trip to the aquarium and afterward went to the beach nearby to collect any rubbish we found. Gloves were perfect and we liked that the bags were paper and not plastic. This made the learning about the plastic problem very real for my class. Going through the rubbish and sorting it into different categories was another highlight. After being at the aquarium and then imagining that rubbish being eaten by an animal it really sent the message home. It inspired us to do a rubbish review of what we threw out over a week at school and think about changes we could make.

This kit tied in beautifully with our learning about Wai/Water. The new entrant students were able to complete some great hands-on tasks and felt empowered becoming official 'Sea Cleaners' at our kura. They recognised the local waterways - from the gutters, the drains around our school, to the local river and the Tasman Sea. They learned about how our local rivers run from the mountain to the sea and loved recreating these in the sandpit! The kit provided lots of scaffolding, even for new entrants, and allowed them to build on their knowledge as the kit progressed. Completing the clean up was valuable to them, and to our whole school, as they were able to see the impact of the rubbish left in our school gardens and they could think about what would happen to it if they had not picked it up. Please have a look at our learning... ocs.google.com/presentation/d/1uJtQY0QBFnnjj3EwXajMyfWxckgWyjhUBkWQDAEAVRw/edit#slide=id.gf65b205eff_2_0

Interesting videos and discussion prompts about rubbish and the ocean. It made the children really think about what they're doing with their rubbish. They were interested with the rubbish collected around our school area and where it could have come from/ where it will go. Highly engaging for children and such an important topic for them to learn about.
