My Year 1 class have been working on this projects as part of their Deep Learning about Citizenship. We kicked off our learning by learning about storm drains. We took part in our local Wānaka Wao Summit. The children looked at storm drains around town, had a talk by local experts about where the storm water goes and made artwork with local artists making lake creature installation art with natural materials. We observed the eels in the lake. We used the posters from the kit to help us learn about how the rubbish that goes down the storm drains ends up in the sea and affects the sea creatures. We listened to many, many stories around this topic. We worked together to design and make posters to encourage others to look after the environment. Our lakeside clean up was meant to happen today, along with investigating inverterbrae and other creatures that live in Lake Wānaka and observing the grebes that live on the lake. Unfortunately, there was a serious incident at the lake yesterday and we had to postpone our visit until next week.

As our school is close to Petone Beach (within walking distance), it has been really relevant for them to understand the impact of rubbish on our local environment and the sea creatures it can affect. We are currently still working on this kit.

We are using this kit as part of our camp activities and cleaning a part of the beach near to camp. The resources to assist with the prep for the clean up are awesome, and are really helping students to think about how our actions now have a lasting impact moving forward. We are looking forward to the results of our clean up!
