The class was shocked to find how our chosen stream was a dumping ground for the community. They had done similar activities during their years at primary so their prior knowledge was good. This has created an action plan for the future which is pleasing.

a positive experience for my class of 5 year olds. We cleaned up around our school. The gloves for each child was fantastic. We will continue to do this over T3 too. We followed it up with Cecilia Seagul and the plastic sea story book.

Year 2 Elim students really enjoyed learning about micro plastics and how rubbish affects our waterways, both local and far. It was great to have tangible incentives with the special gloves and rubbish bags which our students were very excited to keep and use during the school holidays.

The class were unable to visit the beach for a clean up. Instead we did a rubbish sweep of our neighbouring wetland area. We loved the posters of sea creatures that displayed rubbish that we found and this sparked a follow up study of whales and sharks.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We will continue to do beach clean ups over the year. Our school is very close to the beach and we value it very much. We make sure our rubbish goes in the bin and on a windy wellington day we eat inside so the rubbish doesn't blow away!

This was a fantastic resource. My class (Year 1) loved wearing the gloves provided in the kit down at the beach and doing the clean-up around the front of our school. The posters were fun to display in our inquiry area and we did the big beach clean-up using the poster to organise our rubbish which was a great visual tool. We actually did this inquiry at the end of Term 1 when the weather was warmer, however, we were very lucky where we teach, that the beach is across the road. So it was very meaningful for the class to do this inquiry, thinking about the rubbish, the sea and sea creatures. They still talk about it! Thank you so much for a great kit :)
