“The arrival of this resource coincided with a whole school neighbourhood clean-up day, and was therefore very timely. Before and after going out to pick up plastics and other rubbish littering the streets surrounding our school, the students watched videos and completed activities on the Young Ocean Explorers website. In the previous term, we had people from Young Ocean Explorers visiting our school and giving a presentation. Students were motivated to clean up the streets in order to clean up the ocean.”

How has this kit impacted on your class culture? We now have students making posters for the community and trying to encourage others to pick up their rubbish as well. They get annoyed when their lunches arrive in plastic containers, instead of the compostable containers and they also noticed how good

“Our group of year 8s took to the beach on a lovely morning Even after a few other classes had already been at the beach cleaning - there was still a significant amount of rubbish. Hopefully, on completing this unit some of our tamariki have more value for our beautiful Orewa Beach.”

“Brilliant kit, washable gloves huge bonus as we are an enviro school, as are the paper bags, not plastic. We completed a reallt cool cleanup and washes the gloves and will be doing another clean-up again this term s a result. Lots of learning opportunities about plastic, personal responsibility and the impacts of rubbish o the marine environment.”
