What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Due to staffing and timing, we ran this unit towards the end of the term. This did not allow us the time to fully complete the statistical thinking part of the plan. I would recommend starting the year with this unit so we can really delve deeper into the

How many hours did your class volunteer for your cleanup?
How has this kit impacted on your class culture? Great to make models and connections to our local environment. This allowed students to work together to problem solve.
In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? Good to see how our actions have consequences for the ocean even though we are not in a real close proximity. Our tamariki love swimming in our awa so we used this as a way to make a connection and to keep our local waterways clean for us to enjoy.

Reviewing Sea Cleaners Unit- Completed on our local awa as the students at school use this as a resource and make connections to it. Used the unit to follow streams, through to the ocean and made meaningful connections to our kura and tamariki.

The children enjoyed finding rubbish and saving our sea creatures. They were amazed at how far rubbish can travel and the different kinds of rubbish they found. Due to Covid and the inability to get our children to the beach we cleaned up our school over the course of 3 terms. We are a coastal school and can see the sea from our back field so the children worked hard to clear the rubbish from our kura to prevent it getting to the sea.

Our tamariki came into this kit after looking at being kaitiaki (guardians) of themselves. So this flowed beautifully into kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of our community. The tamariki were engaged the whole way through, learning about where rubbish may end up if it is not disposed of correctly. They felt empowered that they could make a real difference by physically going out into our community and showing this kaitiakitanga.

The kit arrived straight away with great resources! It provided a fantastic hands-on learning opportunity for our students to be kaitiaki of our environment. The children were engaged throughout the trip and diligently looked for rubbish on the beach. (I have struggled to upload photos (I think it's a photo type error?). If you want more photos feel free to email me.
