Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Something we have learnt is: - That it is important to keep rubbish out of the sea. - How to sort rubbish into categories. - This learning was about saving the sea life; saving the animals; picking up rubbish; and saving the earth! - We need to keep the sea rubbish free. - There's so much plastic in the world. - Wonderings by some of the students included: Who invented plastic? Why is plastic use increasing? How long doea it take for a piece of rubbish to dis-integrate? - What happens to an animal/fish, when it dies?
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves were fantastic, because they were child size and nice and thick. Having the printing on the back of 'We keep the sea rubbish free' was engaging, and also helpful for re-pairing the gloves after they had been washed.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? It was hard to get an overall total for "bags of rubbish" as we had several different groups and collected a number of half-full-ish bags. We did two rubbish collections - in different places (one around our school - walking the streets to one of our local parks, picking up rubbish on the way, and also at the park, exploring one of our 3 local streams, and then continuing to pick up rubbish as we walked back to school on different streets. This action collected 757 pieces of rubbish! This blew both us teachers and adult helpers, and the students away as it didn't feel like that much rubbish in the bags, weightwise etc. We then did another trip - bussed into town to an area near our main awa in Nelson - Maitai (or originally called the Mahitahi River), we explored that and did a rubbish pick up along side one side of that, before bussing to Tahunanui Beach for lunch/play and another rubbish pick up on the grassy area before the beach. This trip resulted in 677 pieces of rubbish, so combined we had 1,434 pieces of rubbish.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? It has heightened their awareness further, and also got some of them thinking about human nature and wondering WHY people litter, or fail to pick things up when it happens. They have also started to wonder about recycling more, and what they could do to help with this.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I feel that they are more likely to ensure that they are responsible in terms of dealing with their rubbish, and I know some were having discussions at home with their whānau about their learning and what actions they could take, individually and as a whānau - both at home and at school, to help tackle it.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) Local walk - Lat -41.32247032256194, long 173.23272658721243. Second trip into town - Lat -41.266639 and long 173.280385
What was your cleanup location type? Creek, Green Space, Reserve, Park, School, River, Beach, Other
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Straws, Household Waste, Tin Cans, Toys
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Hard to say - depends on what you think is 'interesting'... The students were very interested in the cigarette butts - there were SO many of them from the town clean up site (on a walk up along side the river, near an entertainment venue). They were also too light to register on the scales individually so we ended up weighing them all and then taking an average weight once they were counted. Interestingly, we had very few plastic straws picked up, but certainly some cardboard ones. There were also a lot of food wrappers, and we had valuable discussions about individual wrapping, and what they could do to reduce this - buy in bulk and use re-usable containers.
I found this kit interesting, and thorough, in terms of indroductory learning experiences and tasks. Te Ao Māori perspective and having the links to pepeha were particularly great. I also really appreciated how flexible the kit was in terms of where the clean up and rubbish collection could take place. My teaching neighbour and her class had the same kit, so we combined our classes and did this learning together. We had initially timetabled to explore this kit in early term 2, and link it to other Aotearoa NZ History learning we were going to undertake, which would have involved a trip to a different beach area, but this had to be changed due to other trips across the whole school and we had to save it until Term 4 and carry out the trips in the last few weeks. This did mean that we were unable to fully complete the kit in terms of finalising the art works, but funnily enough, we did actually find a piece of community art that was based on the same concept (see photo attached). THe students were really engaged, and their reflection sheets have shown learning that they took away from it, and also other wonderings, which we could go on to explore this year. The kit provided rich material with which to link maths (number, measurement and data exploration), science, local environment based learning, Te Ao Māori and te reo Māori learning, and the key competencies, and was highly engaging for the tamariki - Thank you! Also, apologies for being so late with getting out kit completed, and on me returning my feedback.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Before the Seacleaners School Kit, I didn't really think about what happens to our trash. Now, after cleaning up our local beach and making art about it, I know it's important to take care of the ocean" "It was so cool! We found lots of plastic on our beach, and it made me sad, but also happy that we could clean it up."
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves that were included were a real hit, with children becoming attached to their pair - wanting to take them home to continue the clean-up efforts in their own time.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) Not sure sorry
What was your cleanup location type? Park, School, Beach
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Household Waste, Tin Cans
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? The most interesting piece of rubbish we discovered was a small crab tangled in plastic fishing wire, discovered on the beach, capturing our attention due to the unfortunate impact of human waste on marine life.
The hands-on approach to learning about our local waterways, conducting cleanups, and creating impactful artworks not only made the lessons engaging but also sparked a real sense of environmental responsibility among the kids. It's a fantastic resource that effortlessly weaves together science, art, and sustainability, leaving a lasting impression.

Our Junior class loved using the Sea Cleaners kit as a part of their Sustainability unit in Term 4. We did a trip to Wenderholm Beach and used the gloves to collect rubbish which was fabulous to implement the learning we have been doing around looking after our environment. Thank you School Kit once again for providing kits for our tamariki!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Mya says " each class, in the afternoon, should go and pick up rubbish", Levi says "don't buy un-recyclable plastic". Lucas says " put your chips into a container (rather than buying the small bags of chips" Khanella wonders "how much rubbish could fit in an animal before it dies?"
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The way it was structured so that each class doing it could do it in their own way. I also like that the rubbish bags were paper, not plastic!
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We (2 classes) did 2 trips, no full bags, however on trip number 1 we collected 677 pieces of rubbish and trip #2 we collected 757 pieces of rubbish!
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Yes I think so, as we did this kit at the end of the year, we haven't put new things in place with our 2023 classes, however we both are keeping some of our 2023 students in 2024 so I know we will carry this mahi over into the new year with our new classes. We (teachers) are going to set up a recycling station in the staffroom which we will take to our local recycling centre when it needs emptying. I would like to implement a once a week rubbish tidy around the school.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? More aware of their rubbish consumption, and hopefully talk to their whānau about how they can reduce this in their home. Students being more careful to make sure their rubbish makes it into a bin, so that it is not blowing around. Picking up rubbish when they see it. We are also beginning our enviro schools journey so this links to that as well.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) -41.32247032256194, 173.23272658721243 (for one of our clean ups, to be fair most of the rubbish collected was from the streets leading to this park)
What was your cleanup location type? Reserve, Other
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Straws, Household Waste
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? A child's stroller just dumped at the park. It was totally munted, but wasn't even left near a bin, just dumped in the middle of the park!
This kit was great, while we (my buddy class and mine) left it late to get started, once we got into it, it was awesome. It was a great opportunity to learn about our local area (me as much as the tamariki in our classes) and get out and about on a couple of trips! We used the teacher guide as a rough tool to get us started so it was great to have the mahi and ideas in there as a leaping off point. My apologies that I have missed the cut off date for this review, I didn't check emails in the last week of school! Naughty me!

We used the sea cleaners kit as part of our inquiry about microplastics in the ocean. We visited a local beach and picked up as much rubbish as we could find. This gave the students a positive action that helped our environment and they were stunned to see how much rubbish they actually found.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them 1. I pick up rubbish on the way to school with my mum so the birds don't eat the plastic and die. 2. I didn't know that many sea animals die because people use to much plastic and then it goes in the ocean if they don't put it in the rubbish bins.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The sea animals posters, we made a mural with rubbish we picked up from the school playground showing how it ends up in the ocean

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? It has been amazing seeing the students being aware of how much plastic there is in their lunch boxes, lots of them pick up rubbish on their way to school, during play times at school. We recycle now, so a huge impact on everyone.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They are now very aware of how we can make a difference and they have already acted on that

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? the students found the tyre the most interesting, they wouldn't understand why someone would be so bad to throw their tyres into a reserve
I'm a Y1 teacher and all my students loved learning about the oceans, rivers, waterways and what's happening to all the animals because of the pollution. They were super engaged in every session, enjoyed wearing the gloves and going to the local reserve and pick up all the rubbish knowing they were helping make a difference.
