The Sea Cleaners Kit supported our inquiry with the unifying ideas, 'We have rights and responsibilities as members of a community' and 'We can take action for safe and healthy communities and environments'. The gloves were a hit with the children and the large bags gave us a goal to fill them! We used the kit in our school playground but plan to use it at the beach or our local wetland in the future and incorporate the awesome posters included.

Sea cleaners kit shows how important it is what we do on land. That our actions have impacts we cannot always see. That it can harm and kill, even if we don't intend to in the first place. Rubbish that goes into the ocean comes in multiple forms and sizes. It breaks up and is even harder to deal with. Some plastics are so small, we never notice them in the first place.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I was disappointed in how much rubbish we collected especially around the skate park which is mostly used by kids. They should care more about the animals in the ocean who may end up eating it. Alice, 6. We all did a great effort and I am proud that we played our part to save the environment especially by stopping that rubbish ending up in the ocean. Addison, 7.

It was amazing. The students were already aware that 'all drains lead to the ocean' as 'Gill' said in the Finding Nemo movie. Although we live inland at Reefton, the students were horrified at how much rubbish we collected beside the river and how that rubbish would have ended up in our oceans.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "When I take my dog for a walk - we ALWAYS pick up her poo and take the poo bag home to put in the rubbish bin. We don't leave it on the grass!" DJ puts his rubbish in the right coloured bin.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Understanding about micro plastics, life cycle of a plastic bottle. Majestic Plastic Bag Mockumentary. - understanding how easy rubbish can move from one area to another to get to waterways.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? 2 (after an hour searching along our local riverbank. But we went with 6 other classes who all collected about the same.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Everyone is making sure their rubbish doesn't blow around the school as it might end up in the drains, go through the pipes and end up in our local river and out into Wellington Harbour. When it's windy we make sure that our lunchbox lids are closed so the rubbish stays inside.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Everyone is on high alert looking around the place for rubbish - and picking it up to put into a rubbish bin. We went on a school picnic to another area in the Hutt Valley and our students were picking up other people's rubish to place in bins! Awesome!

What was your cleanup location type? River
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Food Wrappers, Tin Cans
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Tennis balls, vapes and lighters and polystyrene. We thought the tennis balls were probably because a lot of people walk their dogs on the river bank and sometimes dogs lose them.
Our whole school had a term focus on Kaitiakitanga, and our Junior School all used their Sea-Cleaners Kits to focus on how we could be kaitiaki (guardians) of our local waterways. At the end of the unit 120 kids all donned their gloves and walked down to our local awa - Te Awakairangi (The Hutt River) for a mass clean-up. We were actually pretty impressed with the cleanliness of our riverbanks - but our tamariki were determined to 'do their bit' to look after the river and sea creatures by finding any little scrap of litter that might have otherwise made its way into Wellington Harbour. All of the parents that came with us were so impressed at the dedication and determination of our students to be kaitiaki.
