Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them 1. I like dthat we helped the sea animals so that the sea animals have a little bit more of a chance of not dying. (Chloe) 2. I likes the way we learnt about the reasons why we have to pick up the rubbish especially learning that the sea creatures think plastic is their food.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "Wow we found so much rubbish! I even found a rusty saw" "I had to look really carefully there was lots of fishing line hiding in the seaweed on the beach"
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves and poster we filled in after the sorting, The children were motivated and excited to pick up rubbish, wearing their gloves meant they were happy to get involved and not fearful of touching rubbish. The poster was great we sorted what we found and there was lots of discussion as they were sorting it. The poster helped to guide the sorting.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? When compiled together we filled two very full bags. (This was over 2 sessions of walking around the neighbourhood)
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? They are very aware how our rubbish getting into waterways can impact the sea life if it makes it way to the sea. They are more mindful about picking up rubbish when they see around school and disposing of their rubbish from their lunchboxes more carefully.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The memories of cleaning up our neighbourhood especially along the beach. Many locals would stop and talk to them about what they were doing the children were excited to share their findings.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) Latitude -36.601749 Longitude 174.69909 (Red Beach Area)
What was your cleanup location type? Creek, Green Space, Reserve, Park, Beach
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Straws, Tyres, Household Waste
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? A Rusty saw because we found it in a local park near a playground. The children thought it was odd to find such rubbish in a public park rather than near a building site.
This kit was wonderful and it fit so nicely with our Place and Environment unit. Our class along with our Year 3 & 4 syndicate were making a difference within our community by picking up rubbish and keeping our neighbourhood tidy. The kids were so excited to receive their own set of gloves from the kit. Once we had collected the rubbish the chance to sort it and fill in the Poster provided, led to some great conversations about the type of rubbish we found. This kit was great it also included Paper rubbish bags and a large poster for recording our findings as well as sea creature posters where we could attach rubbish in their stomachs. It made for an awesome display on our wall which children enjoyed looking at and discussing their experiences.

How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? Half a bag at Cockle Bay Beach (well cared for by volunteer scourers); 274 pieces of rubbish first day behind classrooms (see class photo with tub), then on-going weekly clean ups in Y1 area of Cockle Bay School.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Y1 class realises it is EVERYONE's concern and responsibility (eg, not just litter monitors)
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Y1 children realising the importance of picking up litter (not just THEIR litter); realising that keeping rubbish from going into the ocean starts anywhere, not just at the beach (ie, keeping gutters and school clean so rubbish doesn't end up at beach)

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Big long ribbon behind Room 27 because it was beautiful but someone still threw it away as rubbish.
From the start, opening box and reviewing contents was very motivating. This arrived during our Kaitiakitanga theme when we were looking specifically at ocean environments so very well timed for our Year 1 class. We looked at the impact of rubbish in the ocean (videos) and what we could do to help (not buy, not use, recycle and pick up discarded rubbish, especially plastic); considered how everything ends up down in the ocean, so picking up anywhere will stop entry. Class did weekly clean-ups of Y1 school area + occasional lunchtime blitzes of junior playground area; team visit to Cockle Bay Beach for beach clean up; taking care to sort classroom rubbish into recycle and non-recycle bins.
