How inspired are your students to engage in future sustainability action?
How effective were the components of this kit?
Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
The gloves mean we can pick up rubbish and not get dirty, but still look after our place (the environment). That poor jellyfish!
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The gloves - providing a practical and hands on learning experience. Also the posters - a strong visual connection to what was being taught and provided us an impactful image of our rubbish in art form.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
2 large black sacks - we walked several kilometres around our local walkways bordering the waterways and on the urban streets by drains!
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability?
Positive impact - these topics tied in perfectly to our whanaungatanga focus and interconnectedness to the earth (including whenua ora and sustainability) topics early in the year.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
A lasting one I hope. The discussed that the rubbish bits we saw here and there didn't look like much - but when you put it all together it was so much! Most of my year one learners were horrified at harming sea life through our actions and have become more thoughtful as kaitiaki of our environment.
How high was student engagement throughout this kit?
What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster)
I don't know anymore to be honest - this was from Term 1 and Year One learners. This element was not a large teaching focus for the 5 year old learners.
What was your cleanup location type?
Green Space, Reserve, School, River, Other
Which of the following types did your class collect?
Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Cups, Food Wrappers, Straws, Household Waste
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why?
Stringy pieces of plastic (that had broken down) and how this could easily wrap around sea life and harm them!
