The sea cleaners kit came with gloves and bags to help support our beach trip. We have been focused on kaitiakitanga and how we can be a kaitiaki. The kit was perfect to support this. I found the chart sheet to be a really great follow-up once we were back. This linked in nicely to our statistics for maths as we analysed the rubbish we found and put this into a chart.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RLrFqQF-VRSLfMLKxS7MGdzkCYKdZ2m2M-4TkzQsYJE/edit It was really good that they provided some gloves so that we didn't have to touch the rubbish and could bring the rubbish back for sorting. I know that all the creatures in the sea are endangered because of us. We are using rubbish and not picking it up. If I see rubbish now I pick it up. I use less plastic now and use reusable plastic. I went for a walk with my dad on the beach and when we saw rubbish we picked it up. We even picked up golf balls. byOscar 8 years old I feel like we have started to change things for the sea life because we've been picking up the rubbish which usually causes the animals to be sick. We challenged ourselves to not use plastic food wrappings and use refillable containers. Even yoghurt changed from small tubs to big tubs put into reusable. We collected our lunch box wrapping data and it got smaller and smaller. We are not putting wrappers into the sea animals because we're not using wrappers. by Kenzie 9 yrs old.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves and rubbish bags. The animal posters and data posters.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? 4 full bags (1 full bag per trip, 4 trips)
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Hugely. They have an understanding of how little differences they make as children can make a big impact on whenua ora. E.g not using food wrappings and using reusable plastic. Picking up your rubbish when at the beach and taking it home. Picking up rubbish in our envirnonments.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They carry the knowledge and are the teachers of tomorrow for whenua ora. They have gone home with thier learning and taught families how to shop and provide lunches with less or no single use plastic. They have written letter to the editor and are very passionate about making a difference for our environment.

Our team of Year 3/4 students (approximately 150 students) at Red Beach School used the Sea Cleaners Kit over Term 4 2023. We pledged to clean up our local Red Beach with a class walking there each school day for weeks 1-7 of this term to pick up rubbish all the way there and back plus at the beach. We were shocked at how much rubbish we collected. The students sorted the rubbish into recyclables, soft plastic, and landfill. The sorting poster was excellent for focusing the learners and visually displaying their findings. The posters with sea creatures gave us an excellent visual display to put real plastic rubbish they had found into the puku of each creature on display. The videos from the Sea Cleaners unit and teaching plans gave us excellent materials for our Science Concept Curriculum teaching. Having the kit with Sea Cleaners gloves and rubbish bags was very special for the students and was commented on by many in the public, how wonderful it was that we were making a difference in our local moana.

Tamariki loved this inquiry. The resources were really good. As a teacher it was great that while it was based around the ocean, that we could teach the children how the rubbish in town can effect the sea and so is a viable inquiry no matter where you live.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) 43 latitude and 172 longitude.
What was your cleanup location type? Creek
Which of the following types did your class collect? Food Wrappers, Tin Cans
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? I think the most interesting thing was the little amount of rubbish that we found - this amazed the adults that came with us too.
We used the Sea Cleaner kit to tidy up the area around our local waterway. We were excited to find not much rubbish so instead we weeded the new area that had been planted and was very weedy. We discussed how we need to look after our waterway as it will lead to the sea. Children loved being able to wear the gloves - one tip there is a separate glove with a saying on it for each hand.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I went to the beach and wore my gloves to pick up rubbish." "There was so much rubbish in the estuary." "I want to save the animals from the rubbish."
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? We loved the big posters that the students could stick their collected rubbish to. It was really powerful to see how much litter our children collected.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? Almost every child collected a bag full of litter. They collected the litter at home with their families and we followed it up at school the following week.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? My class was really touched by the messaging and simply shocked at the state of our beaches. They are passionate little eco warriors now and don't ever want to see any animals getting hurt from our rubbish.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They now have a little insight on the impact people can have on the world. They are litter picking frequently at school and I hope they will continue to be responsible and put their rubbish in a bin and never to just leave it.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them 1. I wore the gloves and picked up so much rubbish at the beach! 2. Bottle caps were one of the most popular beach rubbish found!
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves and the chart helped our students practically go pick up rubbish and then collect data/ evaluate what they have found by coming back together and recording on the visual chart which we put up in our classroom.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? It has helped them become more aware of keeping our land clean and putting rubbish into the right places.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I am sure they are now more aware of the harmful effects of trash in our environment and even though they may or may not actively pick up rubbish, at least they will definitely not be those who will leave their rubbish behind on the shores.

Thank you for providing us the sea cleaners kit! Our Year 2 students were excited to bring the gloves to do a beach clean up and found some pretty cool treasures like $3.50 while keeping our beaches clean! We had a good time filling out the chart as well and making our own poster, inspired by yours, to spur social action! The students also did great instructional writing with step by step instructions for how to do a beach clean up before they were given their pair of gloves to take home and convince their parents to take them to the beach or any area nearby to clean up!
