Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I went to the beach and wore my gloves to pick up rubbish." "There was so much rubbish in the estuary." "I want to save the animals from the rubbish."
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? We loved the big posters that the students could stick their collected rubbish to. It was really powerful to see how much litter our children collected.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? Almost every child collected a bag full of litter. They collected the litter at home with their families and we followed it up at school the following week.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? My class was really touched by the messaging and simply shocked at the state of our beaches. They are passionate little eco warriors now and don't ever want to see any animals getting hurt from our rubbish.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They now have a little insight on the impact people can have on the world. They are litter picking frequently at school and I hope they will continue to be responsible and put their rubbish in a bin and never to just leave it.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? The children found the sea glass interesting as it reminded them of treasure.
This kit has been a great platform to kick start our learning about our ocean. The children have been so engaged in learning about keeping our oceans clean and have enjoyed sharing their new learning at home and within our school. The children have taken part with such pride knowing that they are helping our world. The kit was well-resourced and would be suited to many age levels.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? It has helped them become more aware of keeping our land clean and putting rubbish into the right places.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I am sure they are now more aware of the harmful effects of trash in our environment and even though they may or may not actively pick up rubbish, at least they will definitely not be those who will leave their rubbish behind on the shores.

Thank you for providing us the sea cleaners kit! Our Year 2 students were excited to bring the gloves to do a beach clean up and found some pretty cool treasures like $3.50 while keeping our beaches clean! We had a good time filling out the chart as well and making our own poster, inspired by yours, to spur social action! The students also did great instructional writing with step by step instructions for how to do a beach clean up before they were given their pair of gloves to take home and convince their parents to take them to the beach or any area nearby to clean up!

We used the kit in a Year 3 Class. Although we did not do a Sea Clean as such, we used all the accessories to clean our school grounds. We used the gloves and large paper sacks to collect the litter from the carpark, under the bushes and all around the place. It was a great effort by the tamariki and they really enjoyed it. Having the gloves made them feel very important and quite safe picking up any rubbish at all. We use the lovely posters of Great White Sharks and other fish as part of an Inquiry project.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) Eeek - didn't do that but (a bit too much for 5-6 year olds) but we are in Te Atatu Peninsula, Auckland
What was your cleanup location type? Green Space, River
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Household Waste
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? A used nappy! We found it interesting in a disgusting sense because as the kids all said "why wouldn't they just put something that gross in the rubbish instead of throwing it in the bush?" Wise words from our future generation.
My Year 1's syndicate had an Inquiry focus this term on "How can we keep our awa clean?" The Waipareira River runs close to our school. We used the kit to clean up rubbish in a green space by our awa that conservationists have been working on - planting native trees etc. The kit was fantastic! The kids loved cleaning up their community. We used the poster to teach the children about the different types of recycling. While we didn't use the rubbish we collected (some of it quite disgusting) we then had a Discovery session on creating art, structures, anything out of recycled materials that were donated by our community of parents.

Room 11 from Red beach School used the sea cleaners kit to go down to Red beach and pick up rubbish with the gloves. We found a bag full of plastic, old toys etc. We used the posters to show that animals are eating the rubbish and a lot of rubbish is ending up in the sea and hurting our sea life. We have used some online planning resources for our Social Science plan. This includes links to movies like 'The lifecycle of a plastic bottle' these resources had a big impact with the class.
