Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I still have the gloves, so I could just go around Feilding, and pick up rubbish". "I learned that the ocean makes a little line of rubbish on the sand when the tide goes out." "In the future I am going to pick up rubbish when I see it." "I found out that lots of rubbish gets picked up by the wind and then covered by sand so you cant see it, and then it can get washed out to sea".
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The kids enjoyed using the gloves and wanted to keep them for future beach clean ups with their families. They also liked the posters that we could glue parts of rubbish on to the bodies of sea creatures - to show the impact of rubbish in the sea. The big poster that we had to fill in was a great way to help guide us when sorting the rubbish into different groups.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? one
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? We already make a big effort to be clean and tidy and do local town tidy-ups, so the kids were used to doing the rubbish pick up. But seeing how this rubbish can affect the sea and sea life was quite impacting.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They will be more likely to pick up rubbish around sea/beach areas from now on, knowing the damage that rubbish can cause when it floats out to sea.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) longitude: 174.9007. Latitude: 39.8847
What was your cleanup location type? Park, Beach
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Tin Cans, Toys
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? synthetic hair - we arent sure what it came off - but it looked like a wig/fake fur off a coat and it had been in the sea for quite a while as it had seaweed growing inside of it.
The sea cleaners kit is a great way to educate kids on all the different types of rubbish that can be found on or near the beach. We talked a lot about small pieces of plastic that get broken down to be small enough for fish to swallow. We noticed that when the tide went out, we found lots of small pieces of plastic that had been swept ashore on the tide line along with other shells/driftwood/seaweed. We also talked about the fact that the rubbish found in the park beside the sea could easily be thrown about on a windy day and be thrown onto shore, which then can float out to sea and harm sea creatures.

This kit was perfect! The gloves fitted their little hands well and the double-walled bags held the rubbish we collected well. The students LOVED walking to our local beach and collected the street rubbish the whole way there too. They found more rubbish by the roads than on the actual beach!

The children used sea cleaners to pick up rubbish around the school grounds and sorted the rubbish in groups of what materials had been used. Most of the rubbish that got found was plastic used to pack chips and muesli bars. Then we looked into our drains and found out that part of the rubbish ends up in the drains. But we also found old classroom resources such as counting material, pens, etc in there. Then we made posters for children to take rubbish from lunchboxes home and keeping our drains healthy.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them It was so fun to pick up rubbish along the track. Student 2 - The Maungarei Wetlands is a protected reserve, the community try their best to keep the native animals healthy by collecting rubbish and keeping the place clean, we are all the kaitiaki of the Maungarei Wetlands. Student 3 - I hope when I grow older the Maungarei Wetlands will still be there. Please think about your actions when it comes to rubbish.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The launching of the kit and it's contents was alot of fun. Before introducing the project, we talked about what each item in the kit was and when laid out together, students then guessed what our term project was going to be about. Of course there was lots of possible ideas from protecting marine animals to dancing gloves. The Sea Project became our school Inquiry for the term where each team identified a local reserve as their focus. For my team and class, we chose Manugarei wetlands, an area situated in an old quarry area near Mt Wellington (Maungarei) and a 25min walk away from our school. Students learned about the wetlands and reserves and the protection of these. They also worked in Inquiry teams and looked at the impact of rubbish in our local waterways and wetlands and possible solutions for these. Of course, the hikoi with 5 classes to Maungarei Wetffeilds was the highlight. Our students were very excited about the prospect of picking up rubbish but understood the impact of what they were doing. The students did an amazing job on the day. The follow up discussion and collating of the rubbish was so valuable and impactful for the students.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? My students have a greater appreciation of their local area, in particular the Maungarei Wetlands. For many of my students who lived in the area, they were unfamiliar with the wetlands reserve and didn't know that it existed right on their doorstep. Some of these students were new to NZ and were very engaged with the concept of sustainability.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? My students attend a weekly Education for Sustainability session and to have had the opportunity to venture out to our local Wetlands and see first hand, the impact of rubbish and pollution on our native flora and fauna, was very important for them. Many students believed that their action of a beach clean up, had made a huge difference. Students were talking about taking their families to visit the area in the weekends.

This was fantastic to plan our inquiry around and incorporate verticle learning across year levels. Unfortunately, there was a restructuring at the school and we didn't get to complete the unit.

It was great to explore how rubbish affects the marine environment but it was tricky to carry out the learning during class time. Instead, we used the rubbish bag and gloves to clean up our school environment and asked the students to go to the beach and do the same at home. I did not get any feedback from the whanau but students were talking about the reason they need to pick up rubbish up afterward.
