Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Picking up rubbish so that the sea doesn't get polluted is important for our town. We like fishing and swimming at the beach and if it is polluted with rubbish it will be yuck!

Our class of 25 students participated in a school beach clean-up morning during Sea Week 2024 and utilised the Sea Cleaners kit to learn more about looking after our taiao. This kit was a great resource and the gloves were a great added extra that the students were able to wear during their clean up.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Suzanna - It was disgusting and fun. It gave us the opportunity to clean our area and I like cleaning. Kasper - I enjoyed doing it. It was a way to help animals survive in the sea. Plastic is very dangerous. Maddox - it was interesting to help the sea. It was a lot of fun and people were able to help in different groups.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The bags were an excellent size for collection and the posters gave the opportunity for the children to sea how animals are affected. The gloves were a brilliant addition as they not only protected the hands of the children collecting rubbish but can now be used by our Gardening Club to help keep our gardens growing and providing a sustainable option for our community.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We worked as a team and collected 3 full rubbish bags.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Was more how far the plastic had spread, which was alarming.
The kit was extremely valuable to our learners and tied into our inquiry for term 1. While we weren't going to the beach itself, our study was on our own waterways and how our rubbish ends up in the sea. So we spent the time looking at the rubbish around the school, did a collection and then created our posters for the sea life and how rubbish affects them.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Tamariki thought it was the amount of food wrappers as they know that they are supposed to take them home.
This kit supported our learning for Term 1 as it was all about Turangawaewae, Water, and statistics. It encouraged tamariki to think and research about the environment and the fish/animals in the awa and moana. Even though we are an inner city school we now know that litter can be blown into the river and make its way to the moana.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them We didn't realize there was so many different types of rubbish. How can we stop this much rubbish getting into our moana?
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The posters of the sea creatures were great, but the large statistics poster highlighted the amount of rubbish and also the types of rubbish collected. The gloves were brilliant and have been washed to be reused again!

We had a fantatstic unit about Tīkapa Moana and how to look after this. The ākonga made posters to bring awareness on how to reduce rubbish getting into our moana, made recylced sea creatures and we did a clean up of our local estuary area with the 4 other Year 3-4 classes. Thanks for a great kit to support our mahi.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The posters were really engaging and captured their interests. It lead to some really in depth conversations about how rubbish impacts on the animals in the ocean and why it's important for us to pick up the litter we find.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? They were already very keen on sustainability and looking after the environment but this has made them more aware of the environment beyond the school grounds or their own home.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? That it is everyone's job to look after the environment and pick up rubbish, even when it's not our own.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? We talked a lot about the plastic bags, becuase it made them see that even though most supermarkets use paper bags now, there's still a lot of food that comes in plastic bags, like salads and breads.
My akonga were really engaged with this kit, especially as we are close to the sea and enjoy going on trips to the beach. They are passionate about looking after the environment and it was easy to get them engaged in the kit and to link it to the science curriculum.

My Year 5/6 class thoroughly enjoyed engaging in a beach clean up and were appreciative of the sea cleaners gloves, rubbish bags and kit which had everything that you needed for a hikoi to the beach. As a teacher, I found the support materials to be highly effective, the visual posters were great and a great way to display the rubbish that we had collected.
