To keep topical issues such as beach cleanups at the forefront of our minds I have made it a habit to show the rubbish I pick up off my local beach when I have been there, at news time on Monday mornings. Many of the students have joined in this crusade and have encouraged their families to make picking up a habit as they walk along the beach. It is amazing how addictive it can become. Coupled with this are the posters we received in the sea cleaners kit which show animals with litter stuck to them. This topic has authentic links to our curriculum such as graphing, profile studies of sea creatures their habits and diet- which shouldn't include plastic waste etc. The sea cleaners kit was a great way to introduce this topic and support the ripple effects of pollution in our waterways.

The Sea Cleaners kit was perfect for our children during term 3. We were running a school-wide topic called "Kaitiaki of our Stream" which focused on learning about and cleaning our surrounding waters. The Sea Cleaner kit supplied the children with lots of meaningful and hands-on activities. They particularly enjoyed their individual gloves which they now take out most morning tea and lunchtimes to pick up rubbish around our school!

We did a trip to the local beach, the kids loved the gloves and looked for any rubbish. We also did a school clean and used the gloves and bags to collect rubbish around the school.
