How inspired are your students to engage in future sustainability action?
How effective were the components of this kit?
Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
We did good! Most importantly, the children realised that even though we were collected litter where we were, it was saving the wetlands in Stonefields by not allowing it to drift or get blown there. The children at the school in Stonefields had already cleared the wetlands area but we did put part by clearing areas beyond that, that were potentially contributing to the litter around the wetlands.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The large poster was very useful even though some parts were not relevant. These parts though helped us to make comparisons with the litter that other classes had collected in other areas.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
We collected three bags in total.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability?
We were already on the path and this has helped us to be actively involved in lad wellness.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
As a result of the kit and the local walk / litter pick we did, the children wrote meaningful acrostics and we certainly revisit the conversations we had at the time.
How high was student engagement throughout this kit?
What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster)
36.8878° S, 174.8394° E
What was your cleanup location type?
Native Bush, Green Space, Reserve
Which of the following types did your class collect?
Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Cups, Food Wrappers, Straws, Tin Cans
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why?
There was nothing that stood out as being different but we did notice that more cans and bottles were found on this walk compared to others. it suggested that this is an area where people get together. We did find vape - one of the children thought it was a lighter!
