Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Olivia: I enjoyed learning about how to be a kaitiaki and the sea cleaners kit was cool because we got our own set of gloves to keep us safe when we did the cleaning. Zoe: I liked learning about the water-systems and how we made our water-system to understand how rubbish can end up in the ocean.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The materials to conduct the beach clean e.g the gloves and bags, the online resources to assist with the learning of how water-systems work

What was your cleanup location type? Beach
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Straws, Household Waste, Toys
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? A child's full nappy because the tamariki were so shocked that someone had left that at the beach. They were all quite disgusted and couldn't believe someone would do that which lead to a great discussion around why we see household rubbish in public.
The Sea Cleaners kit was extremely well linked to our big idea for science in Term 2. We were learning about how we could be Kaitiaki to help Papatūānuku. We learnt about different types of pollution before our kit arrived and the tamariki had already taken an interest in ocean pollution which was great. The kit led us to explore water systems and drew our attention to our local waterways. The tamariki picked one of our local beaches to clean. They all became very excited when we began to explore how our beach clean would take place. The resources provided in the kit linked well to our learning and preparation for the clean. Everyone was highly engaged and interested especially when they got their gloves and teamed up to clean the beach. When we explored our rubbish findings afterwards the tamariki were so interested and thoroughly enjoyed categorizing and filling in the giant poster together.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Nothing really interesting unless decomposing fish skeleton is counted as rubbish! Lots of rope or fishing net rubbish.
Fantastic kit. Loved the gloves the most. They fit little hands really well and wash up beautifully so can be reused. We used them at Spencer Park Beach during our beach treasure hunt and again when we dug up our rubbish/landfill experiment. Thanks for this wonderful resource. It’s great to have children’s gloves that actually fit.

We really enjoyed the Sea Cleaners Kit 23. We followed the unit plan but made adjustments for the Year 0-2 class. We settled on Pandora Pond Napier to carry out our clean up. This was a very successful outing where all children were totally engaged in helping our environment and sea life. The children loved the gloves and we returned with full rubbish bags. We included Jacque from the Napier Aquarium and Helen from Enviroschools on our beach clean up. The posters included in the kit of sea animals for adding rubbish art were also very useful. It was great to have media interest although the article never ended up in the papers.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them During the clean up: "Adults are disgusting with flicking their smokes on the road. We need to take care of the land and leave the place how we found it". After sifting through the rubbish, and placing it on our display wall, this sparked conversations about sea life: "this plastic bag could be caught around a turtles neck, or if a whale swallows it, it could choke and die, then we won't have many whales left!" "Pollution to our water is killing off the sea animals. Sea animals are important because they keep our ocean beautiful.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Classifying rubbish helped the tamariki to distinguish the difference between rubbish and recycling. Tamariki started collecting their soft plastics rubbish from their lunch boxes and placing it in a separate recycling box. The animal posters, where we placed rubbish in the body of each sea animal, helped put into perspective what rubbish can do to our sea life. The visuals sparked conversations with tamariki from other classrooms.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Tamariki have become more conscious about ensuring they pick up not only their own rubbish, but rubbish around the kura, and discarding it appropriately - recycling, soft plastics, compost and rubbish. More tamariki started bringing in rubbish free lunches.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I think for tamariki, learning and now knowing that dropping your rubbish on the ground can come with consequences on our environment, encourages them to continue to be kaitiaki. So far the short term outcome has been fabulous.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? No real interesting pieces but tamariki were disgusted by the amount of cigarette and alcohol cans they found.
We loved the Sea Cleaners kit. In our Kura, our inquiry focus was Whangarei Te Terenga Paraoa - The gathering place of Whales. The sea cleaners kit, tied in perfectly. Although we didn't get a chance to do a proper "sea clean" in the location we had originally planned, Tamariki cleaned up around our local urban Marae, down the roadside gutters and walkway that lead down to the nearby river. The tamariki were grateful to have gloves to wear as they were disgusted by the amount of cigarette buds, alcohol cans and pie wrappers they found in the gutters. The Sea Cleaners kit sparked several conversations both inside and outside the classroom. Since using the kit, some tamariki became quite passionate about keeping our environment clear of rubbish, they encouraged their peers across the school to tidy up - tidying up the whare kai and even squeezing their hands into the drain to clear the rubbish. The poster resources are vibrant and have attracted the attention of other tamariki outside our classroom, sparking conversations about why. An overall great engaging kit.
