We really enjoyed the Sea Cleaners Kit 23. We followed the unit plan but made adjustments for the Year 0-2 class. We settled on Pandora Pond Napier to carry out our clean up. This was a very successful outing where all children were totally engaged in helping our environment and sea life. The children loved the gloves and we returned with full rubbish bags. We included Jacque from the Napier Aquarium and Helen from Enviroschools on our beach clean up. The posters included in the kit of sea animals for adding rubbish art were also very useful. It was great to have media interest although the article never ended up in the papers.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them During the clean up: "Adults are disgusting with flicking their smokes on the road. We need to take care of the land and leave the place how we found it". After sifting through the rubbish, and placing it on our display wall, this sparked conversations about sea life: "this plastic bag could be caught around a turtles neck, or if a whale swallows it, it could choke and die, then we won't have many whales left!" "Pollution to our water is killing off the sea animals. Sea animals are important because they keep our ocean beautiful.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Classifying rubbish helped the tamariki to distinguish the difference between rubbish and recycling. Tamariki started collecting their soft plastics rubbish from their lunch boxes and placing it in a separate recycling box. The animal posters, where we placed rubbish in the body of each sea animal, helped put into perspective what rubbish can do to our sea life. The visuals sparked conversations with tamariki from other classrooms.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Tamariki have become more conscious about ensuring they pick up not only their own rubbish, but rubbish around the kura, and discarding it appropriately - recycling, soft plastics, compost and rubbish. More tamariki started bringing in rubbish free lunches.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I think for tamariki, learning and now knowing that dropping your rubbish on the ground can come with consequences on our environment, encourages them to continue to be kaitiaki. So far the short term outcome has been fabulous.

Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers, Straws, Household Waste, Tin Cans
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? No real interesting pieces but tamariki were disgusted by the amount of cigarette and alcohol cans they found.
We loved the Sea Cleaners kit. In our Kura, our inquiry focus was Whangarei Te Terenga Paraoa - The gathering place of Whales. The sea cleaners kit, tied in perfectly. Although we didn't get a chance to do a proper "sea clean" in the location we had originally planned, Tamariki cleaned up around our local urban Marae, down the roadside gutters and walkway that lead down to the nearby river. The tamariki were grateful to have gloves to wear as they were disgusted by the amount of cigarette buds, alcohol cans and pie wrappers they found in the gutters. The Sea Cleaners kit sparked several conversations both inside and outside the classroom. Since using the kit, some tamariki became quite passionate about keeping our environment clear of rubbish, they encouraged their peers across the school to tidy up - tidying up the whare kai and even squeezing their hands into the drain to clear the rubbish. The poster resources are vibrant and have attracted the attention of other tamariki outside our classroom, sparking conversations about why. An overall great engaging kit.

Thank you so much for providing yet another excellent resource. This one tied in beautifully with our schools Inquiry focus in T3. While it seemed a simple idea, I'm hoping that it has the long-term effect of making children more conscious of waste and also the packaging that they consume.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? A cigarette lighter. It was an unexpected find!
The resources were great and very relevant to my class. The children loved the activities. They were excited to go to a local area (where most of the children had never been!) and pick up rubbish. We decided to photograph our rubbish and put it on the sea creatures rather than the actual rubbish we collected, as it was disgusting!

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Rubbish was standard food wrappers, nothing of high interest.
This is a fantastic free resource. However, with the nature of inquiry learning being flexible it meant that we ended up going in a slightly different direction than I expected and didn't use the kit how I originally intended. However, we were still very appreciative of the resource and will be checking out the other kits in future.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I liked wearing the gloves. They stopped my hands from getting too sandy." "By looking at the posters I know what animals I've helped. I also liked measuring the size of the rubbish."
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Both the posters and the gloves.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? The children ended up using buckets instead of bags (so they wouldn't blow away in the wind). Once all rubbish items were combined, it worked out to be 3/4 of a bucket.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? It has brought an awareness of rubbish that is real and tangible. The children loved to hunt for rubbish and even the tiniest pieces. I know that each time that children go to the beach, they will remember what they have learned.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Hopefully they will be much more aware of the rubbish that they might forget to pick up on the beach, and where it is ultimately going and what animals it will affect most. Children are starting to care about the environment from a young age and this kit really supported this.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Knotted ropes and polystyrene balls (from bean bags).
The gloves were fantastic. Although they weren't waterproof, they gave the children a sense of ownership and purpose when going to the beach. All children were keen to keep their gloves on the whole time. This created a sense of safety when sorting rubbish too. The posters included were excellent. We brought back some rubbish that we'd found, specifically for the purpose of placing them onto the posters. They have great impact to see visually 'who' we are helping.
