For term 3 we were completing an inquiry about Protecting Papatūānuku. We treated the Sea Cleaners learning as one of our learning stations for tamariki to engage in ways that we can protect Papatūānuku. Our tamariki loved the resources that came with this - the posters, the gloves, the bags and the learning sheet ideas. Thank you!

Our learners were engaged with the learning and enjoyed talking about how rubbish in the sea impacts our animals. As a school, we went for a walk through our local community waterways and cleaned these up using our kits. The learners enjoyed seeing how different waterways connect and how these can end up in our oceans.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "My uncle used to drop his MacD's rubbish and chip packets out of the car window - I've stopped him now!!" - the amount of time we referred to the "journey of D's Uncle's chip packet"! "I'm going to stop my mum from buying all these snacks in packets and use bigger bags and my own boxes". "The turtle at Kelly Tarlton's ahd to be rescued because it was sick and starving; I don't want anymore plastic getting into the ocean to make this happen again".
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Craeting an art work incorporating the rubbish and making the connection that we had stopped this from getting to the ocean. The poster at the end of the clean up, to help facilitate the sorting and analysing - seeing it all laid out and thinking about the hows and whys. The to all

What was your cleanup location type? School
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Cups, Food Wrappers, Straws, Tin Cans, Toys
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? chip packets - amazing to see how many, but also how long they stay recognisable for after being in the open air for so long - a huge lesson in action on realising how long it takes for plastics to decompose (Never!!!).
What an incredibly powerful resource kit! We did so much more learning with and through this kit than first anticipated! It took us all on many more journeys and inspired so much more action. Unfortunately due to the weather being somewhat unfavourable, in Term 2, our wider community exploration and clean-up had to be rearranged. We settled for a school-wide survey and clean-up instead. This was by no means a lesser task! What it did reveal was much more relevant to our children. We discovered that WE ALL NEED to take immediate action to look after our "own back yard" and it is important to make a difference NOW! Thank you School Kit for engaging our tamariki and informing them on ways to be proactive and enhance getting the message out there! Those gloves are still in use daily!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Students: Some fact cards would have been great to use because we then could have made comparisons between our findings and the facts cards. I had no use for my gloves once the clean up had been done. We didn't place the rubbish onto the posters that we got because we didn't see the purpose for doing that. We sorted the rubbish and we collected and at the end of it all place it all into our own bin.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves because they were the main part of the resource to use for the clean up.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We collected two large bags which were mainly full of hard green plastic. We think it was like corragated card but a lot of it.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? They had an understanding of sustainability asa this is taught consistently and woven through each learning area.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They ended up making additional resources as a follow on from the ones provided inside the kit.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) We didn't have this poster inside our kit. We had posters of the different creatures associated with the sea.
What was your cleanup location type? Creek, Reserve
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Food Wrappers
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Old shoes because they weren't in pairs. We think that as people walked through the muddy, swamp parts that their shoes got stuck and they didn't bother to collect them.
Sea Cleaners wasn't as popular with my class as many other SK's. They had already learnt much about sea pollution, its effects, and Impacts while also thinking about possible solutions. The resources in this were fine for a clean-up which was the purpose of the kit, however, the remainder of the items inside the kit weren't required for the class after the clean-up had been completed.

What was your cleanup location type? Reserve

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Plastic, plastic, plastic We has a discussion why plastic rubbish are the most common. People are too lazy to walk to the rubbish bin, Some people do not care as it is not their house ( so selfish). After that event, Room 23 children's lunch boxes had a big change, less chip packets and wrappings. What a change!
The provided gloves and bags were effective and perfect for Waterway cleanup day. After the event, our learners took the gloves home with exciting stories about cleaning our local waterways and reserves.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Oil container and lots of metal pieces. These were not dropped by children but adults within the school.
This was such a great learning experience for all tamariki. We didn't organise an off-site clean-up, we spent a couple of weeks collecting and sorting rubbish from our school environment. This was a really powerful experience as we found over 100 wrappers in our school playground. By investigating the streams and rivers close to our kura, the children clearly saw how this rubbish could end up in the waterways. We presented our findings to the school to inspire others to clean up the school as well, which two classes then did. I loved the posters that came with the kit as these were such great visuals. This kit also led to discussions around waste in lunchboxes and how to minimise this. Children were keen to use the gloves in their own neighbourhood to continue to collect rubbish to prevent it from ending up in our waterways.
