After many rained out attempts, we took our sea cleaners kit along with us when we did our dune planting in Term 2 - a great opportunity for the tamariki to see that we not only need to support regeneration of the dunes, but that many people use the dunes as a rubbish bin! They had a real surprise at just how much rubbish is dumped or blows into the dunes and is trapped there until someone takes it out. Great learning experience for the tamariki :)

Initially, my class did not understand why we would be needing to go on a trip to our local beach at Mount Maunganui to pick up rubbish. But, once we had so much more understanding it was such a valuable trip. The children said it was one of their favourite experiences! Thanks so much for the fabulous kit and giving us the eagerness to get out into our local community. The discussions and feedback from parents and children afterwards was hugely positive. Thanks so much!

Halswell School, Te Kura o te Tauawa closely identifies with awa-'Te Tau-o-awa-a-Maka' (Nottingham Stream) and Huritini (Halswell River), so using the 'Rasterbator' giant jigsaw mapping tool helped our tamariki make connection between our local taonga waterways and the causes of effects of sea pollution. We connected this School Kit to 'Plastic Free July' and will have an awa clean-up in late July. The sourced TED-Ed videos were very informative! Nga mihi nui, thank you so much!
