Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I thought I would be able to clean up the garbage patch one day, but I know know that the garbage patch is huge and I will never be able to do that by myself. I will do what I can to help not have rubbish in our ocean though." "I am looking forward to doing our social action projects and making people aware of how precious our water is and what they can do to help save it"
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Having the connection to water and children's mihis was great. It made them think about why this important and gave it more meaning and it made sense! I think the mapping skills was great. Kids loved the blown up map and we tracked where our local rivers go to. Made it authentic and put it in context for the students. Being Kaitiaki of our local awa was a great thing for students to do. Kids still talk about the clean up going in to term 2! We also hooked into the local council and also did water testing when we were down cleaning up, that was also pretty cool to do, especially after the cyclone and how clean our river actually is.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? 8 full bags!
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? I think my class are more aware of where their rubbish goes, and how if affects our local sealife. They are still wanting to get the drains painted at school so kids don't put things down there. Hoping to get this done in term 2 as they continue with their social action projects. Children were proud to be kaitiaki of our local awa.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The kit's adaptability and flexibility empowered my learners to take ownership of their learning journey. It has provided them with the freedom to explore topics at their own pace and in their own way, by instilling a sense of curiosity and eagerness to explore new concepts and ideas.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I really liked using the gloves because we each got our own pair and it meant we could clean up the awa and not get yuk stuff on our hands. It was really crazy that we filled up the big bags of rubbish just by going for a walk.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? A lot. We did an awa clean at our nearby river which sparked a big curiosity on how all of that rubbish could have ended up in the Moana. We are now driving our own inquiries about what we could do to have a positive impact on whenua ora.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The memories of cleaning up the local awa we often frequent. Our kids are still proudly cleaning up rubbish in our school also.

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? A plastic container that held a birds body- the kids came across the makeshift “coffin” for the bird and they dug a hole and buried the bird as it was better for the environment. This was a lasting memory for my kids and they still talk about it.
Another great kit from School kits, everything you need to connect kids to social change and how they impact the moana. The gloves and bags made participating easy and the posters gave us great perspective on the impact we have.

Sea Cleaners kit was an absolute hit at ACG Sunderland. We integrated it into our Social Science curriculum when investigating water way pollution and conservation. We also made it a routine to use the big bags to clean our school and students were delighted to use the gloves. My cohort enjoyed using this kit as it related well to their Kelly Tarltons Sea life Overnight camp experience. They enjoyed the visual posted and investigatied environmental impacts on these beautiful creatures. Thank you so much. Miss Anderson
