Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Having all the gear for the actual clean up day was really beneficial - gloves, bags etc

How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We actually ended up going to our local wetland area with out entire team over the course of a day to do a big clean up. Some of what we collected was garden waste so was spread back or composted. But in total, we ended up with 9 bags of rubbish across the group.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Hugely! As mentioned above, some have even grown it into their families as well

“My class absolutley loved doing this kit. As a group, they are real eco-warriors and enjoyed the challenges and activities posed within the kit. Being outside, invovled in solving real-world problems allowed the children to see possible opportunities to further their thinking moving forward - some have even got their whole family on board and are doing weekly clean ups along the shore near them. Highly recommend this kit and will definitely do again.”

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? My class is still little but they are beginning to grasp the idea of taking care of the land we live in and how creatures can be hurt if we do not do our job.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I hope they will grow and develop the ideas we established here - as they move through the school

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? It was general beach rubbish! Our beach is relatively clean due to the area we live in and the effort people make to take care of the beach.

“We used a lot of the compiled resources with our classes for our term inquiry. We got all the way to plotting our local waterways and making a mock river in our sand pit. Unfortunately we ran out of time to do the big clean up (and we did mini ones along the way of our school anyway).”

“Tamariki loved this kit and made posters out of rubbish collected on our way down to the Awa. We put these up at our local Awa and when we went back at the beginning of this year for a walk the tamariki spotted them and were very proud that the council had left them up there.”

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I thought I would be able to clean up the garbage patch one day, but I know know that the garbage patch is huge and I will never be able to do that by myself. I will do what I can to help not have rubbish in our ocean though." "I am looking forward to doing our social action projects and making people aware of how precious our water is and what they can do to help save it"

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Having the connection to water and children's mihis was great. It made them think about why this important and gave it more meaning and it made sense! I think the mapping skills was great. Kids loved the blown up map and we tracked where our local rivers go to. Made it authentic and put it in context for the students. Being Kaitiaki of our local awa was a great thing for students to do. Kids still talk about the clean up going in to term 2! We also hooked into the local council and also did water testing when we were down cleaning up, that was also pretty cool to do, especially after the cyclone and how clean our river actually is.

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? I think my class are more aware of where their rubbish goes, and how if affects our local sealife. They are still wanting to get the drains painted at school so kids don't put things down there. Hoping to get this done in term 2 as they continue with their social action projects. Children were proud to be kaitiaki of our local awa.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The kit's adaptability and flexibility empowered my learners to take ownership of their learning journey. It has provided them with the freedom to explore topics at their own pace and in their own way, by instilling a sense of curiosity and eagerness to explore new concepts and ideas.

“The Sea Cleaners kit was nothing short of fantastic. This resource brought a new level of engagement and interactivity to our classroom. The resource was incredibly user-friendly and had great links and ideas for teaching. There was lots of content available and it saved me having to do heaps of planning!”
