The Sea Cleaners school kit allowed my students, who are all neurodiverse, to begin to understand the importance of being careful with their rubbish and the impacts it is having on the animals and environment around us. We did some great writing and Maths around the different pieces of rubbish we found and how we could try to limit the amount of rubbish we use. We also enjoyed looking at many different sea animals.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Ocean rubbish is harmful to sea creatures, I think it is despicable and we should stop this immediately. When I see rubbish I think that people haven't considered their impact on wildlife, This was good because it made all of us think about it.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Graphing and measuring rubbish, the discussion prompts

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Apologies, I wasn't here for this bit, so have only been able to answer what I can see from the student's work.
We really enjoyed working our way through this kit in the lead up to cleaning our patch of the waterfront. I had a very early baby half way through this unit and the reliever managed to pick up where we left off without too many problems! This one could be good to have an opt out of the physical box option. I didn't realise until we recieved it that it was just a box of gardening gloves and as a enviro school we already have a ton!

What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? Broken tractor toy because it was found in the sandpit we do our athletics prep and the children were happy no-one would hurt themselves on it.
Children loved the posters and great for discussions. We have since used the gloves to help keep our local environment at school rubbish free too including native planting areas. Thank you to the sponsors for your generous contributions to School Kit. We always love seeing what new kits are coming up.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them It is really important to keep plastic out of our ocean. Fish eat it, thinking its food, and then they die. - Olivia. I really enjoyed going out and picking up the rubbish. I didn't think we would find much, but we did. It was good to care for our local beach. - Gabriel
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The posters. They are bright and colourful and really send the message home.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? They are now aware and thoughtful when seeing rubbish around the school (and hopefully outside school too). They love the ocean, and want to keep it clean for many generations to enjoy in the future.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Keep our oceans clean. Think twice about your rubbish and where to put it.

Thank you for an amazing kit to use with my Year 4 class. The kit had everything we needed and the kids loved all the learning. The highlight was going out to Mount Maunganui beach and collecting rubbish. We found some plastic beads that came from the Rena Disaster, so many years ago! Thanks again...School Kit Rocks!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Although parents often make school lunches, students were able to educate them about why they should not use single use packaging which resulted in more waste free lunches at school. Students learnt where their litter can end up and the posters were good to highlight how many different animals can be affected.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The links to the students' pepeha because they learn and build on it each year and suddenly the river became very important. The videos are always engaging, the practical collection of litter and sifting and sorting.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We didn't do one big collection but it was ongoing for most of the term.
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? The students will now voluntarily pick up litter if they see it in the street. There is a steady increase in waste free lunches. We want to put pressure on the Senior Management team at school to think about minimising waste with all their fundraising initiatives - especially bought lunches.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? They know that they can make a difference, however small. They need to walk the walk alongside talking the talk.

What was the latitude and longitude of your clean up? (from Sea Cleaners poster) -43.30827, 172.59603.
What was your cleanup location type? School
Which of the following types did your class collect? Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Cups, Food Wrappers, Household Waste
What was the most interesting piece of rubbish found and why? We have a lot of young people that use our school grounds during the weekend so always have a lot of extra litter on a Monday morning. The students were fascinated with the range of pods from vapes - especially the different flavours.
We started with a flourish and watched the videos and identified all the waterways around Rangiora. The students really enjoyed the mockumentary - The Majestic Plastic Bag which resulted in the class walking around Rangiora and counting all the plastic collected in the grates of the storm water drains. We looked at where the different waste water goes and discovered that our school is contributing to the problem with litter from lunch boxes. We also went on a 'Waste of Time' EOTC run by the ChCh City Council that teaches students about the Material Recovery Facility in ChCh and ways to minimise waste. We have a waste audit every year as part of being an Enviro School but the students wanted to target single use plastic in lunch boxes. They collected data from all the classes and found out that about 40% regularly have no packaging and use recycleable containers. The students analysed what type of packaging was the most common and set to work to find alternatives. They made posters to encourage students to do the 'right thing' and presented ideas and information at assemblies to promote change. We had intended to go down to Dudley Park (our local skatepark) and collect rubbish from there but every time we organised a trip the weather was prohibitive.
