Did this kit increase your students awareness of the skills needed to work in the vet industry? We also had a parent come in and talk to the students who is a vet nurse. Combined this gave a really great insite to the vet world.

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? A couple of parents have mentioned that the students had told them about it which is a good sign that they enjoyed it.
“This was our introduction to our unit about animals in different parts of the world. It was motivating and the students really enjoyed the interactive and mystery element of this kit.”

Did this kit increase your students awareness of the skills needed to work in the vet industry? Absolutely, some of the students even tried harder for the next few weeks, even though they are way off where they need to worry about pre-requisites. Very cute!

“This kit is amazing! We loved learning about diagnostic techniques and the science involved (including a massive discussion about gaining qualifications in later schooling to become a vet), as well as the crossover to using coding to represent each animal and their symptoms. We had some robust discussions around each diagnosis.”

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? Very enjoyable learning opportunity and enough challenge to make them work! Parents reported being told about it at home which is a good sign!
“In my intermediate school science GATE class our focus was on comparing anatomy. This kit offered an opportunity for my students to explore a particular animal in detail. The students loved the independent nature of the diagnostic activity and found the resources challenging but approachable. It did need me to some detailed planning and organising to identify the main steps and how to present the activity. I found it tricky to find some resources on the website as they were called one thing on the lesson plan and something else on the resources list. I could not download the lesson plan - I had to reopen it from the website each time I wanted to review it. Overall it is a clever and useful resource that worked well within my unit.”

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? Our whānau loved this kit! Lots of engagement with what we were doing. Students loved bringing in their own "pet" from home and we even made our own veterinary clinic. We loved this kit!
“The biggest takeaway from using Story Vets was that we need to take care of animals around us - the ones in our homes, the ones we wish we had in our homes and the ones out on farms.”

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? Parents came in to discuss their knowledge. We have a vet nurse parent in our class! The kids loved exploring the X-rays too :)
“My year 5 & 6 students were thrilled to learn like vets. They enjoyed being scientists and taking on the roles required to collaborate and problem solve. Many struggled with the analysis and diagnosis but this enabled greater collaboration and research. We also got in a vet nurse speaker!”

How did this resource help students understand process of elimination using data analysis? This was included in an engaging and non threatening way. The students were determined to do their best to diagnose the animals. A lot of extra googling and independent fact finding ensued - the class were hugely engaged and finished with a far better idea of data analysis.

“If I could copy and paste my students’ report comments to their whānau it would speak volumes about the positive impact of the learning in Term 2…and…we didn’t even get to ‘scratch’ the surface of the entire kit! Students were engaged by the science/veterinarian language and in making connections with the fairytales/fables. These in particular gave a different perspective on how we approach problems and the causes and effects of our actions. They loved the X-rays and posters because it required they think deeper beyond the surface. The entire kit challenged the learning across other curriculum areas because we made sure all our reading, mathematics and writing had direct links to or inspired us to search and make connections - a real life career that demonstrated the true integrated value of life long learning. Thank you! Just wish we’d had more time to do it real justice!”
