“This was an amazing way to engage my class in community service. My kids were pumped from the beginning and got busy fast. Our big day was better than expected and all the class got stuck in to make it a memorable day. I've been to a few of my students houses and they display their posters with pride. We're hoping someone will notice them and ask us to do a project for them. The kids are already talking about how they can do more projects in the future.
The resources were fantastic as well, because they gave the students a good sense of direction when planning. It was nice to see the student responses to identifying their own strengths and what that would bring to the project.
I highly recommend this resource.”
“Great kit, unfortunately we weren't able to give much time to it, due to outside influences. However the students accomplished what they wanted to which was to give back and they did that by baking for a local rest home, twice weekly and maintaining a community maara kai.”
“We are using this kit across the school as part of an enviroschool project. We have leaders who have taken control of this and are involving children from across the school. The younger children are particularly keen. Our work is aminly done at lunchtime.”
“Another amazing kit that gives the children the chance to work on something that has an impact on the community around them. Our plan involved getting kids to brainstorm and plan a community cycle track around the perimeter of the school fields. Not only was this a chance for them to have another fun thing to do at school but could be utilised by those outside the school too! Looking forward to more kits in 2020!”
“The SVA kit tied in beautifully with our Te Tuna Tāone - Urban Eel inquiry, although we did find it tricky to fit it all in at the end of a very busy term. Still...it's great to see those blue plastic fish protecting the drains around our school!”
“This was our first time participating in the SVA. Our focus was finding a need in the community and fixing it. We decided to create Kindness Rocks and distribute them throughout the community. Individual students partook in various other activities we had brainstormed and discussed - school clean up, donating and volunteering for the next fortunate.”
“Our Year 1 and 2 class buddied up with a year 5-6 class to develop our school community gardens. We planted lettuces, watered and weeded, painted the compost bin and decorated the bottle glasshouse. Everyone was able to take a lettuce home to their family. We harvested our potatoes and cooked them to help cater for the end of year family picnic.”
