What type of project did your class undertake? Project for Those in Need
On Thursday the 26th November, Room 18 visited Cantabria Retirement home for our Student Volunteer Army project. We read aloud to the residents with our expressive voices and interviewed them about their life's journey. Room 18 all enjoyed making mouth watering morning tea for the residents of Cantabria. We sang Christmas carols and some children even accompanied us with bells and the marimba. Room 18 felt proud to be a part of the Student Volunteer Army and spread some Christmas joy.

The idea behind the kit was really awesome but I feel it wasn't at the right level for Year 2's. My students didn't really engage with this kit like they have done with the others we have used this year.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? My class worked alongside the Salvation Army, sourcing donations to set-up a transitional home for a homeless family. They were also to add linen, food, Christmas treats and decorations, plant the gardens and much more! The family moved in later that day

This is an amazing resource, which I would like to repeat using each year. My class are still buzzing from our event on Monday. Due to the detail of the process and the challenges of the year, it took us roughly two terms to complete, but each step of the process was such worthwhile learning. In future, it would be great to have a slightly longer time for the resource.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? I have 2 children in my class this year with parents going through cancer treatment. It has often been talked about to support them. So it was a no-brainer for us to fundraiser for cancer to support those families. The children decided to run a Relay for

This is an awesome kit with real and meaningful learning opportunities. Unfortunately due to lockdown, I had to push it to Term 4 which was a bit of a rush! However it was actually a great way for my year 6 students to end their time at our school and leave a legacy.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our project not only brightened up a space in our school but also showed other students what service can look like.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
This year's SVA project worked very well on par with last year's version. The kids took full ownership of the process eventually deciding that they would plant small flower gardens in a wasted space in our school. They took charge of finding funding, getting permission and canvassing our community to identify what was needed. The wristbands were a nice touch and encouraged reluctant students on the day to get stuck in. We were lucky in that we had the kit from last year which contained high vis vests for platoon leaders and a flag for HQ which added to the sense of event.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The local community were very happy that the local streem is now running with clean water. We have approached them to find out if we can do some planting along the stream banks and are waiting for them to respond.

What type of project did your class undertake? Water Based Project
We were lucky enough to have the oppertunity to work with Dairy NZ Water and study a river with LEARNZ. This motivated our class group to focus their SVA on helping local streams. They did this by cleaning up the area and cleaning weeds out of the river. This we found as a good way to help the community as the water flow had become stagnated and the water quality had dropped and some parts of the river had become quite smelly.

At first I was overwhelmed with this project. It was my first time signing up for a School Kit and this demanded a lot of energy, especially in the climate of Covid. I was worried about all the work it was going to be for me. I wondered what on earth we could do to volunteer when we were still in a state of unease with the pandemic. I handed it over to the kids and they came up with some amazing ideas. They started to motivate me. They really took it on. The one idea that they really wanted to do was run a school-based café. I wondered if that would be a safe option, touching food, etc when we were trying to social distance. So they decided we could all wash hands, wear gloves and masks, and maintain other safe practices. They went to the principal with the idea and he okayed it. So it was all go from there. As the Covid restrictions eased in our area, I felt more comfortable. The students really enjoyed figuring out what jobs we needed, what they would be called and how we would apply for them. So off we went. Although I had to oversee everything, I really didn’t have to do as much as I thought I would. The kids were amazing, motivated and thought of everything. Our café was a success. It ran over four days. We sold toasties, baking and lemonade. Some students chose to dine in, others took away. This was a highlight of our year. The students took away some great skills and felt good doing this work for others. Boy were the kids excited about this.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our projects helped the school. They were 2 things that needed doing urgently but we had no one that could do them so the kids stepped up.
